Ready, Steady, Cook, Auctioneers!

Cookery competition between auctioneers set to attract the crowds at NBA Beef Expo.

Four livestock auctioneers from the North East’s main marts will be demonstrating whether they’re as good at cooking as they are selling at this year’s beef industry showcase event.

The Ready, Steady, Cook-style contest will show off some quick and easy beef recipes in a fun event that’s sure to draw the crowds at the National Beef Association (NBA) UK Beef Expo, which returns to Hexham Mart on May 22.

Trevor Simpson, Senior Auctioneer at Hexham and Northern Marts, will have the home advantage in the cook-off against Andrew Atkinson, Mart Manager at Darlington Farmer’s Mart in the first heat. James Little, Auctioneer at Harrison and Hetherington in Carlisle will face Ryan Roddan from Longtown Mart in the second heat.

The event, scheduled for the main ring, will use top quality British beef supplied by Stephenson and Sons butchers of Haydon Bridge, and will feature running commentary from Frankie Walton, who has performed the MC role at previous live cookery events for the NSA Northsheep events.

The winners of the heats will compete in the grand final, Michael Eames, the Executive Head Chef at Slaley Hall Hotel will be tasting the results to decide who will be presented with the winner’s cooking trophy, chef’s hat and spoon, sponsored by RMS Corbett Bulk Haulage and Spreading.

NBA Beef Expo chair, Robert Addison said; “The Ready, Steady, Cook competition is set to be great fun for the audience and the participants – and hopefully the judges who will taste the results.

“A little bird tells me that our competitors are already flexing their cookery muscles and testing their competition creations on their friends and family ahead of the event.

“But there is a serious message behind the fun, and that is to demonstrate the versatility of British beef. Everyone knows that British beef is beautiful in a slow roast or a casserole, but if you’re looking for a faster meal, you don’t have to choose steak – there are so many cuts that lend themselves to quick, healthy and nutritious midweek meals.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what our competitors come up with.”

NBA UK Beef Expo is a must-attend event for everyone involved in the beef industry supply chain. The showcase will this year focus on better efficiency for better returns and brings together farm tours, seminars and the Spring Spectacular Show, where exhibitors will compete in 16 classes that are set to attract the cream of commercial and pedigree animals. There is a £6,000 prize fund and £700 for the Supreme Champion, plus classes for young handlers and showing novices keen to gain show ring experience.

There will also be the full range of educational and technical trade standards, where visitors can get up to speed with the latest industry developments.
