Hexham Native and Continental Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts had forward an entry of 652 store cattle and suckled calves at their weekly sale on Friday 21st March which included 242 Angus, Shorthorn and other native breed types for the special monthly sale of such cattle.

Another great show of older, forward sorts were presented in the first half of the sale and whilst these again sold to a sharp trade they were largely easier on the week.

The sale was topped at £1490 for a great big, well-bred and well grown Limousin bullock at 18 months from Messrs Allgood, Nunwick Farm which was one of a thumping run of steers brought out by farm manager Peter Rowcroft, now renowned at this centre for the quality cattle he presents on behalf of his employers. The consignment of 32 largely Limousin bred steers attracted substantial attention to average £1290 throughout, many being only 15 months of age.

Messrs Walker Bros. Satley came forward with another good run of hefty bullocks and topped with their favoured breed; a Simmental cross at £1440 then with a Charolais at £1400.

From the entry of native breed cattle it was an Angus cross bullock at 20 months of age which topped this category at £1380. The beast was consigned by Messrs Woodcock, The Hagg, Cornhill on Tweed, returning to the Hexham Store Cattle ring after an absence of Fourteen years. Father & Son team Bill & Colin Woodcock presented a nice run of Angus & Shorthorn steers and heifers, all by registered sires which peaked at the aforementioned £1380 and £930 respectively.

Despite the ease in finished cattle prices the all-important ‘sire information’ is still crucial for those finishers wishing to achieve various native breed scheme ‘premiums’ and the use of a registered Angus bull from the prevalent ‘Rawburn’ herd paid off for Messrs Woodcock in this instance.

Angus bullocks figured highly in the leader board of prices on the day with both John Boon, Urpeth Farms, County Durham and John Baty, Catreen, Hexham both achieving £1370 for their best offerings.

It was only the second beast into the ring that realised £1360 from Jimmy Thomson, East Trewick, a massive framed Simmental cross steer which sold to a noteworthy price bearing in mind it had slipped over the Thirty month threshold.

In the second half of the sale a good entry of yearling and younger sorts were presented and these peaked at £1350 for a great Limmy cross steer from Hepburn Farms, Wooler which was one of a quality run presented by Farm Mananger David Merridee. With best sorts selling easily, the majority of these younger cattle were cheaper on the week.
