A small show of prime cattle saw some cattle slighty sharper on the week, with many more needed on a weekly basis. The sale topped at 214.5p for a Limousin bullock sold by A & WJ Taylor & Son, Dashwell Green, bought by Mr G Moor.

Longtown cattle ring

A mixed bag of bulls with quality again selling well, numbers short of requirements. Top price of 212.5p for a Limousin shown by G J A Rome & Co., Niven Hill.

Barren cows – A good entry of working cows were on offer to the usual good company of buyers who bid freely for all types of cows. Brian Calvert sold an excellent dairy bred Simmental cow at 129p, realising £864.30 to Sean McGimpsey. A tremendous load of hill Galloways sold to a top of 118p from Messrs Waugh, Shorthorns to 116p from Parcelstown. Angus cows to 114p from Mrs Little, shown by her little grandson Andrew. Dairy cows sold on a firm trade topping at £774.80 from Justicetown.

A steady show of 2,516 prime lambs were forward to the usual ring of buyers, with trade in line with the national trend this week. Still lambs over 40 kilos with flesh were easiest to sell and realising recent rates. Lightweight lambs a lot sharper on the week, on the back of a buoyant store lamb trade. Many more lambs could be sold to advantage on a weekly basis. Sale topped at 234p for Beltex from Bridgestone and to £104 for Suffolks from Skelfhill.

Longtown sheep ring

The largest show of the season so far saw 5,217 cast sheep forward to a busy ring of buyers. Heavy weight ewes were dearer on the week and short of requirements, with lightweight ewes easier owing to large volumes though the country. Sale topped at £185 for a Texel ram from D’Mainholm and £147 for Texel ewes from Kirkton.
