C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 27 prime cattle & prime bulls, 24 OTM cattle, 2,402 prime lambs and 2,702 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 7th July 2016.

Prime cattle were an excellent show for quality but still short of requirements, with new buyers in attendance trade was sharper than previous weeks.  The sale was topped at 237.5p which is the highest price for quite sometime, this was for a British Blue heifer shown by A. & W.J. Taylor & Son, Dashwell Green and bought by J.S. White & Son, Barnsley.  Limousin heifers peaked at 229.5p from the same home and purchased again by J.W. White & Son.

An improved number of young bulls and a show of quality not to disappoint.  The ever growing demand is there to be seen.  The sale topped at 209.5p, twice, both for Limousin, the first from J. Jardine, Yett Farm, followed up by G.J.A. Rome & Co., Niven Hill, both animals bought by J.A. Jewitt Ltd, Quality Meat Wholesalers.

An excellent entry of 24 cows were on offer to the usual good company of buyers who bid favourably for everything.  Trade continues to surprise and delight vendors and as ever more cows are required on a weekly basis.  Scottish borders farmer Tom Edgar topped the sale with an Angus x Charolais selling to 145p.  Angus x from The McKerrow Family sold to 125p with Limousin x cows from the same to 118p.  Galloway hill cows sold to 100p from W. Hodgson. The top priced cow was £1,160 from Whitton with others to £939 for a dairy x Limousin from 3 Woodhall.  Dairy cows sold to £726.80 from The Stubb.

The 2,402 prime lambs were another large show for numbers to the usual large ringside of buyers.  A quality show of lambs ensured another buoyant trade, best of the week, averaging 211p (212p SQQ).  Selling to a top of £110.50 for Texels from The Keep and to 233p per kilo for Texels from Wallend.  Many more lambs could be sold to advantage whilst trade remains brisk.

A smaller show of 2,702 cast ewes and rams saw most classes, apart from hill ewes, £5-£6 easier on the week after last weeks festival bonanza.  Many more ewes needed on a weekly basis.  The sale topped at £152 for Texel ewes from Drumreach, Caithness and for Texel rams from Eastside.
