C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 26 prime cattle & prime bulls, 25 OTM cattle, 585 prime hoggs, 2,404 prime lambs and 4,382 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 30th June 2016.

A mixed show of prime cattle with a shortage of really well fleshed cattle. The sale topped at 215.5p for a Limousin heifer sold by A. & W.J. Taylor & Son, Dashwell Green bought by M.J. Wharton, Blackbrow, Wigton. Limousin bullocks topped at 209.5p also from Messrs Taylor and once again bought by M.J. Wharton.

OTM cattle – Sale average 116.3p

An excellent entry of 25 cows, OTM’s and Cast Bulls were on offer to the largest company of buyers seen in this section for years with 11 active buyers at ringside. Trade was on fire for all types with several buyers unable to start with the ferocity of the trade. Topping the sale was an OTM steer at 149p from Richard Ritson, OTM heifers from Jimmy Thompson sold to 124p. Jimmy sold Limousin cows to 146p with Simmentals from Elaine Wilkie to 142p. Native breeds sold to 124p for Angus from Messrs Warwick, Girnwood, with Galloway selling to 102p from Langholm Farm.

Top price per head was £949 paid for a Continental from Horsegills, others sold to £908.90 from The Swaites. Simmental topped at £844.90 from Shaw Cottage. Black & White to £792.85 Justicetown.

Talking point of the day was a superb Angus cast bull which in a sweep prior to the sale which RR won, when he weighed 1,080 kilos. After splendid bidding from all corners of the ring he was finally knocked down at 128p to Longtown’s Happy Wanderer.

Having talked to the new faces at ringside they all said they will be at ringside next week so let’s have 50 cows for then.

The 2,404 prime lambs were the largest show of the season so far and saw a flying trade in all classes, many more could have been sold to advantage. The usual large ring of buyers saw the sale average a whopping 210p per kilo which was 42p per kilo above the corresponding sale last year.
