Quality Store Cattle Forward at Hexham

Hexham & Northern Marts offered 322 head of store cattle at their weekly sale. A great entry for the time of year saw increased quality on the week and this was reflected in the trade.

Increasing numbers of one time prime ring consignors and deadweight finishers are attracted to this ring and this centre to take advantage of comparatively high rates.

This week saw the sale topped by John Wise, Preston Manor Farm, Newton Aycliffe, County Durham with a great big Limousin cross steer at 24 months which quickly ascended to £1445 with his pen mate following closely behind at £1435, both purchased by Declan Foley. These were followed by a great run of 12 forward continental cross steer from David & Darren Taylor, East Benridge, Morpeth from 22-25 months which peaked at £1350 for a pair of British Blue cross steers purchased by Tommy Barton, Ashton-in-Makerfield. Their run which could easily have been presented in any prime sale sold well to average £1263.

Heifers also sold well and these were topped at £1230 for a sizeable Angus cross lady by a registered bull from Messrs Bennison, Warden Law which was purchased by Tony Green doubtless for sale through his recently opened Penshaw Farm Butchers store in the shadow of Penshaw Monument.

Once again a good show of yearlings were brought forward and these continued to sell well with perhaps only second rate sorts showing any signs of easing. These were topped at £1240 for a great Borders bred Limousin cross bullock at the upper end of the age scale from Willie Thomson, Hownam Grange, Kelso. This was closely followed by a heifer at 14 months which realised £1210 for regular consignors and noted breeders the Burn Brothers, Grange House, Stamfordham again being sold to Messrs Foley Bros, Mirlaw House.

As Spring moves into Summer and numbers begin to tighten we are increasingly interested in batches of cattle yet to be sold in our area and further afield. Please contact our auctioneers who will be delighted to advise on how best to market your cattle.
