A Welshman who started his career with UPM Tilhill as a graduate trainee has climbed the ranks to become one of four regional harvesting managers.

Iwan Williams joined UPM Tilhill ten years ago after graduating with a Degree in Forestry from Bangor University and has worked his way up from assistant forester in Yorkshire to running the company’s Central Harvesting Region. Iwan said: “I’m delighted with my new role and that I chose forestry as my career. I especially like being based back in the area of Wales where I was brought up.

“Starting as a graduate trainee with UPM Tilhill was definitely a good decision and, in the last 10 years, I have gained some fantastic experience across both the forestry and harvesting sides of the business. Harvesting is very rewarding - at the heart of the job is good judgement, people skills, negotiation and co-ordination to make sure we safely harvest and obtain first-class timber for our customers.”

As well as having a passion for trees and being outdoors, Iwan is a huge rugby fan. He is a referee for the Welsh Rugby Union and was an assistant referee for Wales U18 v Italy, as well as being an official for the Wales U20 six nations v Scotland. He says the people management skills he has learned on the pitch have really helped him in his harvesting role. As well as being involved with rugby, Iwan is vice chair of the Wales Young Farmers’ Club.

UPM Tilhill’s Director of Timber Operations Peter Whitfield added: “The harvesting side of UPM Tilhill’s operation is expanding due to increasing demands for our services which has led to several new appointments. We were delighted to appoint Iwan to this extremely important role. He has proved himself in every role so far and is known for his great enthusiasm and strong customer relationship skills.”

Iwan is based at UPM Tilhill’s Bala office in Gwynedd, North Wales, and can be contacted on 01678 522340.

UPM Tilhill, established more than 60 years ago, is a national company operating from a network of offices throughout the UK. UPM Tilhill is the UK’s largest forest management and timber harvesting company. The company provides a full range of consultancy and contracting services to the forest owner and forestry investor.
