Geldard Grabs Glory Again at CCM Skipton Charollais Highlight
Charollais
sheep breeders took centre stage at CCM Skipton
for the British Charollais Sheep Society’s annual show and sale of commercial
rams. (Tues, Sept 17)
Once again, it was Cumbrian breed mainstay and immediate past North of England chairman Richard Geldard who clinched supreme honours – for the third consecutive year with a ram lamb and an unprecedented fifth time in the past six years.
Richard Geldard with his 2013 CCM Skipton Charollais ram lamb supreme champion.
The 2013 title winner from the Geldard family’s Wraycastle
flock at Low Foulshaw Farm, Gilpin Bridge, Kendal, is by a son of Rhaeadr
Jack The Lad, acquired from his Welsh breeders by the Geldards.
Out of a home-bred ewe sired by Galtres Favour, bred near York
by Deborah Whitcher, the victor sold for 450gns (£472.50) to CR
Nicholson, of Cawthorne, Barnsley. The Geldards sold two more ram
lambs at 380gns (£399) and 370gns (£388.50).
Cyril Dougherty with his 2013 CCM Skipton Charollais ram lamb reserve champion, joined by judge Harold Keast.
Standing reserve champion was the second prize ram lamb from another
well-known Charollais
breeder, North Yorkshire’s Cyril Dougherty,
who runs the Shamrock flock at Kirby Misperton, Malton.
One of January-born twins by Abbascombe Minder, bought by Mr Dougherty
as a ram lamb, the runner-up, a second prize winner at this year’s
Ryedale Show, made 420gns (£441) when joining David Baxter in Bingley.
Mr Dougherty, who won three first prizes and had the reserve champion
ram lamb with Charollais entries at this year’s Great Yorkshire
Show, will return to Skipton next month as defending champion at
the British Charollais Sheep Society annual autumn show and sale
of pedigree breeding females, on Saturday, October 12. “We will
have some fantastic gimmer lambs for sale by Abbascombe Minder,”
he said.
Devon’s Harold Keast, of Coldridge Baron, Crediton, again made
the long trip north to act as show judge. He was particularly taken
by the strong ram lamb class and said the Geldards’ supreme champion
“stood out as soon as he came into the ring.”
In the shearling ram show class, as in 2012 Mr Keast chose an entry
from the Foulrice
flock of breed enthusiasts Charles and Valerie
Marwood in Whenby, York, as his first prize winner. The home-bred
son of Langstone K2 sold for 820gns (£861), second top price in
show, to T Patchett, of Leeming Bar.
The Marwoods also performed well with other entries, among them a son of Rainbow Komodo Dragon, which achieved the day’s top price of 850gns (£892.50) when selling to Richard Sandham, of East Carlton, Yeadon.
They also sold another shearling ram at 750gns (£787.50), this for a son of Wernfawr Jim also acquired by Richard Sandham, along with a ram lamb at 720gns (£756) to J Hird, of Norton, plus two further 480gns (£504) shearling rams to K&A Duncan, of Mewith, Bentham, and S Webster, of North Stainley, Ripon. A further ram lamb made 420gns (£441) on joining P Dixon, of Kirkby Stephen.
Cyril Dougherty was also in action at the ringside when paying
580gns (£609) for one of the older rams, Parkgate Logan, a December,
2010-born son of Arjane Kukri from the Skelton Whin flock of Tom
and Judith Hunter in Hunmanby, Filey. The Hunters also achieved
510gns (£535.50) with a shearling ram by Foxhill Knight that fell
to FC Wade & Son, of Timble, Harrogate.
Mark Worthington, who runs the Moss Side flock in Ramsbottom, made
720gns (£756) with a shearling ram by Dudston Jasper, which returned
to Lancashire with Alan Parker, of Downham in the Ribble Valley.
Charles and Valerie Marwood’s daughter Deborah Whitcher, who runs
the Galtres flock at Skewsby, York, was responsible for the second
prize shearling ram, a home-bred son of Netherton Kaspian, which
became another S Webster acquisition at 440gns (£462).
David Dennis, who has the Silton flock at Over Silton Thirsk, achieved
a third prize double in both show classes, his ram lamb selling
for 380gns (£399) to Durham’s R Graham and the shearling ram for
420gns (£441) to Bolton-by-Bowland’s Helen Bury.
The Wetherby-based Linton Springs flock of Samuel and Robert Tindall
sold a shearling ram son on Skelton Whin Gladiator at 500gns (£525).
It also fell to North Yorkshire’s T Patchett.
Overall averages at the fixture, which attracted a 68-strong entry
and was sponsored by JG
Animal Health, were: Aged rams £451.50,
shearling rams £508.67, ram lambs £338.10.
