Jean Price Champion Again at Skipton Jacobs Highlight

The Welsh-based Pentrenant flock of Jean Price in Churchstoke, Powys, secured back-to-back championship successes at the Northern Area Jacob Sheep Breeders’ 38th annual show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart. (Sat Aug 31)

Mrs Price, who won last year’s supreme championship with her husband Robert – the couple now run and show their own separate Jacob flocks – secured victory at this year’s renewal with her first prize January, 2012-born shearling ewe and female champion, by the home-bred Pentrenant King William.

The four-horn victor sold for the day’s top price of 650gns (£682.50) to Messrs Denton & Bramwell, of Holmfirth, who also acquired the Prices’ 2012 Skipton champion.

Mrs Price was also responsible for the third prize ewe lamb, a February-born four-horn daughter of another quality home-bred, Pentrenant Freddy, which sold for a class-topping 380gns (£399) to the Saxby family in Waddington, Lancashire. She further chipped in with the second prize ram lamb.

The Prices – husband Robert won the Jacob supreme championship at this year’s Royal Welsh Show – also had a hand in the Skipton reserve supreme championship, awarded to the first prize two shear or over ram and male champion from John Atkinson’s Northlands pedigree flock in Thirsk.

The February, 2010-born four-horn runner-up is by Pentrenant Bailey and sold for top price in class of 300gns (£315) to Melissa Pickard, of Bolton-by-Bowland.

Mr Atkinson also sent out the red rosette-winning aged ewe, another February, 2010-born four-horn, again by Pentrenant Bailey, which became another Melissa Pickard acquisition at 140gns (£147).

Top price in class at 200gns (£210) fell to the third prize aged ram from Miss M Guy, of Richmond. The March, 2010-born two-horn by Perrmill Jeeves also fell to Messrs Denton & Bramwell.

Standing reserve male champion was the first prize ram lamb from the Kinloch pedigree flock of Scottish breeder Mike Munro in Ladybank, Fife. His January-born two-horn Kinloch Coby is by Hurrsdale Englebert, bred in Skipton by Northern Area Jacob Sheep Breeders’ mainstays Gavin and Rebecca Haworth.

The lamb also headed the class prices when selling for 510gns (£535.50) to Cumbrian buyers R&L Wilson, of Aspatria. Mr Munro also presented the third prize ram lamb.

The reserve female championship was awarded to the first prize ewe lamb presented by the Overdale flock of Stephen Dodsworth in Nawton, York. The six-month-old four-horn daughter of Blackbrook Doddy sold for 230gns (£241.50) to the show judge, well-known Welsh Jacob breeder Wyn Harries, of Llandeilo in Carmarthenshire.

Shearling ram prices peaked at 260gns (£273) for the second prize winner, a home-bred January-born four-horn from the Carochy flock of Barbara Webster in Newburgh, Fife. The Carochy Jags’ son was acquired by TH Huddleston, of Longtown in Cumbria.

The first prize shearling ram came from the Laurels flock of David Sizer in Cleatlam, Darlington. The March, 2012-born son of Bentley Conquistador made 250gns (£262.50) when joining Welsh buyer DJ Bevan, of Carmarthen.

Ewe lambs averaged £107.77 per head, gimmer shearlings £190.27, aged ewes £89.91, ram lambs £117.25, shearling rams £170.33 and aged rams £186.90.

The show, which attracted a robust 215-strong turnout - the largest entry of any Jacob show this year across England Wales and Scotland –It was supported by JACS Trade and DIY Warehouse in Skipton, Massey Feeds’ representative Janet Sheard, Northern Nutrition and CCM Auctions.

The Jacob show and sale formed part of CCM Skipton’s annual Rare & Native Stock Breeders Auctions of rare, minority and traditional breeds of cattle, sheep, goats and pigs.
