For the sixth year running, Borderway UK Dairy Expo returns, bringing together what can only be described as the crème-de-la-crème of British dairy genetics. With 370 head of cattle set to take to the stage in over 50 classes, all aspiring to take home a share of the £15,000 prize pot, the event unquestionably highlights the quality stock that the UK has to offer.

Since its launch in 2012, Borderway UK Dairy Expo has now become one of the most prestigious dairy events in Europe. Commenting on the judge appointments for this year’s event, David Pritchard, Event Organiser and Operations Director at Harrison & Hetherington said:
“Borderway UK Dairy Expo attracts the highest calibre of livestock and exhibitors and we are delighted to welcome such an esteemed panel of judges who together have such an impressive wealth of knowledge and experience. Judging such a specialist showcase is certainly no easy task, and I would like to thank them all for their commitment.”

Holstein judge, Roger Turner, raised at Ralihaven Holsteins, has a lifetime’s experience with the breed and previous judging assignments have seen him visit more than 21 countries. A member of both the All-American and All-Canadian selection committees for various breeds, Roger has officiated at numerous US National Shows. His judging career has taken him to many countries including the National Holstein Show in Argentina and the Irish National Show at Millstreet.

Following the breed classes is the Champion of Champions which is to be judged by Paul Harrison from Heddon-on-the-Wall, Northumberland. Paul, alongside his wife, Ann, runs the prize winning Chishillways Holstein and Breckly Shorthorn herds. A renowned judge of both Holstein and Milking Shorthorns, Paul has previously judged at a number of prestigious shows, including; the Royal Highland Show, the National Holstein Calf Show and the National Milking Shorthorn Calf Show.

Commenting on being invited to judge at this year’s event, Paul said:
“Having done a lot of judging throughout the country, this is the first time I will be judging at Borderway UK Dairy Expo. Nowadays, this really is one of the biggest shows in the country and it is a huge honour to be asked to judge the Champion of Champions.

“On the day I will be looking for an animal of real functional type, with correct characteristics within each breed. At the end of the day, I will be looking for the type of cow that I would want to milk at home!”

Judging the UK & International Showmanship Championships is Michael Halliwell of World Wide Sires. Michael is the Business Development Manager for World Wide Sires UK which provides dairy farmers with access to a complete range of leading dairy genetics. In a bid to inspire and encourage the next generation of dairy breeders, also included in the schedule is the Showmanship Youth Championships which sees young breeders from across the UK and Europe compete for the top honours.
