Eildon The Premium Choice for Commercial Suckler Producers

Beef Shorthorn Rothesay Eildon is a highlight of Cogent’s latest Signature Beef genetics range, boosting the native breeds section of the catalogue and offering commercial suckler producers a high ranking bull with the versatility to produce replacement heifers and fast-growing steers for finishing.

Sired by Tofts Landlord out of Dunsyre Nettle, Eildon’s Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) show the very best of the breed’s renowned maternal characteristics and combine this with growth and conformation figures that place him in the top 1% of the breed.

“Eildon is a breed-leading bull,” comments Cogent Beef Sire Analyst Boomer Birch. “He has the rare combination of an attractive pedigree, great figures and the right physical appearance – including the strong red colour that will breed the desirable dark suckler cows. He’s a real all-rounder that will suit the requirements of many forward-looking suckler producers.”

The bull was bred at The Morrisons Farm at Dumfries House in Ayrshire, the product of significant investment by Wm Morrison Supermarkets in native breeds that it considers to be a key part of a sustainable British beef suckler industry.

“The Morrisons Traditional Beef range launched in 2011 is progressing very successfully and offers producers a 20p/kg premium over our base price,” says Agriculture Manager Andrew Loftus. “The scheme is built around the Beef Shorthorn and we are delighted to see that according to the BCMS 2013 figures it has become the fastest growing native breed.

“As a very modern Beef Shorthorn bull that is bred to perform in a typical British suckler herd environment, we expect Eildon’s progeny to feature strongly in this scheme in the future. In addition to his impressive EBV figures, Eildon has been independently ranked for feed conversion efficiency by the Beef Improvement Group. This is the kind of performance that should help to make British beef suckler businesses more profitable and sustainable in future.”

Rothesay Eildon is available exclusively from Cogent as both conventional and sexed semen as part of its agreement with Morrisons.
