Beef Shorthorns reach 4,200gns at Carlisle

Beef Shorthorn met a steady commercial demand with bulls peaking at 4,200gns and females to 2,700gns at the breed society’s spring show and sale at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, on Friday 24 May.

Beef Shorthorn Bull trade was led at 4,200gns by the reserve male champion, Wells Edward TI +0, SRI +2, a red entry from J Wood, St Andrews, Fife. This 23 month old by Dacre Rock Star and out of Glenisla Waterloo Naomi R44, sold to E Belchier, Maybole, Ayrshire.

The male champion, Cairnsmore Eric TI +18, SRI +13, was knocked down sold at 3,200gns to W S L Muir, Stromness, Orkney. This two year old red and white bull by Captain Vortrek of Upsall and out of a homebred dam was bred by B and J Landers, Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire.

Dunsyre Esperanza TI +17, SRI +11, was secured by a call of 3,000gns from M E and T D Tailford, Riding Mill, Northumberland. Sired by Dunsyre Asterix and out of a homebred dam, this two year old roan bull was bred by C Coombs, Carnwath, Lanarkshire.

Bids of 2,800gns were made twice. Ryden Earl TI +15, SRI +8, a 23 month old roan bull by Ls Animal and out of Annanwater Ace from A Ryder, Carlisle, sold to T A Williams, Denbigh, Clwyd.
Gilven Earl TI +16, SRI +15, was secured at the same 2,800gns price by J A Griffin, Ashbourne, Derbyshire. Bred by R S and G Johnson, York, Yorkshire, this 23 month old light roan was by Chapelton Promoter and out of Bilsdale Sapphire Zanna.

A call of 2,600gns was made for Chapelton Excelsior TI +8, SRI +6, a two year old dark roan bull by Cavans Yankee Y838 and out of a homebred dam. Excelsior was bred by J Biggar, Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire, and sold to I C Wilson, Banchory, Kincardineshire. A matching bid of 2,600gns was made for the two year old red and little white bull Rothesay Eden E216 TI +15, SRI +13, from Morrisons Farms, Cumnock, Ayrshire. Knocked down sold to A and D Whitehead, Haltwhistle, Northumberland, Eden was by Glenkiln Cambus and out of Dunsyre Tessa 6th.

The female trade peaked at 2,700gns for Glenisla Duchess C638, a three year old red and white heifer entered as part of a draft sale of the Hutton herd owned by B and C Goddard, Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire. Bred by Major J P O Gibb, Perth, Perthshire, Duchess was by Fearn Wyvis and out of Glenisla Duchess W238, and sold to J H D Fanshawe, Naseby, Northamptonshire, with her month old heifer calf Hutton Gemma, by Tarrant Waverley, at foot. The same buyers invested 2,250gns in a 10 year old cow consigned by the Goddards and bred by R E Ball, Uttoxeter, Staffordshire. The red and little white Croxden Rosie Duchess was by Althorne Prince Peter, out of Althorne Katrina Duchess K1 and offered with her month old heifer calf Hutton Graceful, by Waverley, at foot.

Messrs Goddard also took a call of 2,300gns for Galla Daisy Wildeyes, bred by J W Frame, Biggar, Lanarkshire, and sold with her unregistered month old roan bull calf by Podehole Edward at foot. This three year old roan heifer was by Galla Atlas and out of Bon-Accord Sunny Wildeyes 3rd. The same buyer paid the same 2,300gns price for Hutton Nonpareil Foxy, a two year old dark roan heifer by Vortrekker of Upsall, out of Nonpareil X540 of Upsall, and bred by Messrs Goddard. This one was sold with her unregistered red and white month old bull calf, also by Edward, at foot.

Messrs Goddard continued their consignment at 2,150gns with Nonpareil X540 of Upsall, bred by the Hon. G Turton, Thirsk, North Yorkshire, and her month old heifer calf Hutton Georgie, by Waverley, at foot. This one was a five year old roan cow by Crooked Post Triple A8K and out of Nonpareil Sylvia of Upsall S075, and went home with M J A Ward and Daughters, Scarborough, North Yorkshire.

In the main sale Oakleigh Evie sold for 2,600gns to K C Anderson, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire. Bred by P Turnbull, Pickering, North Yorkshire, Evie was a two year old roan heifer by Blelack Masterpiece and out of Ballard Anushka.

A bid of 2,400gns secured Kidston Fiona 2nd for D C Gibbon, Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire. Sired by Chapelton Cavalier and out of Cairnsmore Talented Fiona, this 21 month old roan heifer came from J Stewart and Partners, Upper Kidston, Peeblesshire. The same breeders realised 2,100gns for the 22 month old red and white heifer Kidston Tulip 1st, by Cavalier and out of Kidston Hyacinth 3rd, and sold to J F Bentley and Son, Barnard Castle, County Durham.

Averages: 16 bulls, £2,447.81; 26 served and maiden heifers, £1,702.21; 7 cows and heifers served and/or suckling, £2,182.00.
