Old Glenort secures Aberdeen Angus Championship at Balmoral

Securing the first ever Aberdeen-Angus championship at the new Balmoral Show location at the Maze, Balmoral Park, was local breeder James Porter, Ballinderry, Lisburn, with the first prize heifer from the two year old heifer class, junior champion and overall female champion Old Glenort Lavender L251.

Breed judge John Coultrip of the Wingfield herd, based in Faversham, Kent, England, described this heifer as “a quality breeding female, just the type the breed should be promoting. She has a good top, underlines and great feet and legs.”

Shown by stockman Ian Rae, this one is by Old Glenort Ennis J116, this one is out of the Haymount Wessuro B198 daughter Old Glenort Lavender H035 who goes back to a previous Balmoral champion.

In the interbreed championship on the second day, judged by fellow Aberdeen-Angus breeder Colin Hutchings, Dulverton, Somerset, she went on to secure the reserve interbreed championship and was described by Mr Hutchings as “a clean, modern type of Angus with great locomotion and breed character.”

Reserve breed championship honours then went to Alan and Naomi Morrison, Maguiresbridge, Co Fermanagh, with the March 2012-born Drummeer Blackbird M803. This Netherallan Peter Pershore E052 daughter is out of the former show female Knockadrinan Blackbird G400, a Gigginstown House Drew daughter, who was purchased as a calf at four months old. This one was heifer calf champion at the Northern Ireland Calf Show in November.

Drummeer Blackbird was also reserve junior beef interbreed champion on the second day of judging, again under Colin Hutchings.

Securing the male championship having travelled up from the south was last year’s multi award winning senior bull Rosemead Karona J957 from Albert De Cogan, Castlemartyr, Co Cork. Bred by former Society president Angus Stovold, this Rosemead Jeronne F657 son was purchased privately in 2011 off the back of a successful show season. He is out of the Rosemead Junior Eric D453 daughter Rosemead Karlotta F657.

Clinching the reserve male championship was Portadown, Armagh-based Sam and Sarah Matchett with the March 2012-born Birches Lord John L052. By the herd’s stock sire Carrigroe Fred, this one is out of the successful show cow Carrigroe D Lady Jane. This bull also took the reserve junior championship honours behind the overall champion.
