Haffey Hat-Trick at Moira Holsteins Sale

Holstein heifers peak at 2,650gns and average £1,852 per head. It was a one, two, three in the showring for the Haffey family’s Kilvergan Herd at Holstein NI’s monthly show and sale, held at the Pedigree Sales Arena, Moira.

Stephen Haffey, and sons Timothy, David and Aaron, from Lurgan, County Armagh, claimed the supreme, reserve and honourable mention awards, at the Kilco-sponsored event. Company representative Hugh McCluggage was on-hand to congratulate the winners and present the awards.

Brothers Timothy, David and Aaron Haffey, Kilvergan Herd, Lurgan, scooped the champion, reserve and honourable mention awards at Holstein NI's February show and sale, held at Moira.

Judge Kenny Watson, Majestic Herd, Macosquin, County Londonderry, was impressed with the Haffey’s Holstein heifer line-up. “They are all good milky commercial heifers with excellent udders. The champion oozes dairy strength and super legs and feet, and she really stood out in the showring.”

Trade peaked at 2,650gns for the Haffey family’s honourable mention award winner Kilvergan Buckeye Winnie. This two-year-old heifer is by R E W Buckeye, and is out of a home-bred Roylane Jordan daughter. Calved five weeks and producing 37kgs daily she joins William Herron’s enterprise at Newtownhamilton, County Armagh.

The December 2010 born Hilltara Toystory Daydream came under the hammer at 2,500gns for Sam and John McCormick, Bangor, County Down. Sired by Jenny Lou Mrshl Toystory, she is out of a home-bred Picston Shottle daughter that is classified EX. This one also joins William Herron’s herd.

Also on Mr Herron’s shopping at 2,420gns was the November 2010 born Herdstown Gold Comelle consigned by Alan Patterson, Donaghadee. She is by the Braedale Goldwyn son, Herdstown Goldwyn. Calved four weeks this one is producing 40kgs per day.

The father and son team of Philip and Simon Haffey, Portadown, County Armagh, realised 2,240gns for the October 2010 born Glasson Amazing Go Jewel. A potential fifth generation VG/EX heifer by Mr Atlees Alta Amazing, she is out of a home-bred EX dam by Glasson Outside, which gave over 9,500kgs at 4.60% butterfat and 3.43% protein in her fourth 305-day lactation. This one joins Steven Robinson’s herd at Crossgar, County Down.

Mr Robinson also paid out 2,020gns to secure the champion Kilvergan Buckeye Precious. Born in September 2010, she is by R E W Buckeye, and is out of a home-bred Glasson Gale daughter. Calved at the end of December she is currently producing 41kgs per day.

Heifers achieved an 89% clearance and averaged £1,852 per head.

Heifer in-milk, born between 19/11/10 and 12/02/11 – 1 , and reserve champion, S Haffey and Sons, Kilvergan Baroque Ricki by Major Baroque Allen; 2, and honourable mention, S Haffey and Sons, Kilvergan Buckeye Winnie by R E W Buckeye; 3, S Haffey and Sons, Kilvergan Baxter Erle 3 by Emerald Acr Sa T Baxter.

Cow in-milk – 1, David and Alan Wallace, Abercorn Loader Beverley Elizabeth GP83 by Cogent Loader; 2, Robert Shanks, Dunadry Kris 49 by Kerndtway Howie.
