Countdown On to CCM Skipton’s Limousin Double-Header

Some 120 Limousin cattle will be on parade at Craven Cattle Marts’ annual two-day showpiece at Skipton Auction Mart, on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 14 and 15, one of the early season highlights for breed devotees.

Taking centre stage on day two is the annual and main Spring show and sale of pedigree Limousin bulls and females, which has this year attracted an 86-strong entry – 58 bulls, four cows with calves and 20 maiden heifers. Many of the north’s leading breeding lines will be represented.

In 2012, the North Craven Gallaber pedigree herd of the Tommy, Jennifer and Ian Sedgwick, from Burton-in-Lonsdale, achieved top price honours for the second consecutive year with a senior bull sold for 4,800gns (£5,040). The Sedgwicks have another bull entered at this year’s renewal and will be hoping to make it a memorable hat-trick.

The fixture has a new headline sponsor in JACS Trade & DIY, of Skipton, which is further cementing its support of CCM Skipton. Among the cash prizes is a £100 windfall for the supreme champion.

Ted Ogden, CCM’s livestock sales manager and auctioneer, said: “The fixture grows in stature year on year and has again attracted an increased entry of top-notch cattle, with plenty of opportunities to purchase the best of the region’s Limousin breeding stock.”

The ‘Craven Limousin Day’ double header begins on the Tuesday with the 6th annual Northern Limousin Extravaganza, a show-only for 2012-born halter-led pedigree and cross-bred Limousin youngsters.

On their first-ever foray into the pedigree show arena, Garrowby Farms, of Garrowby, near York, clinched last year’s Skipton supreme championship with a 13-month-old son of the celebrated Glenrock Ventura. Garrowby’s Clive Rowland will also be back again this year to have another crack at the title.

A stock judging event organised by the North East Limousin Breeders Club, which is supporting both days, again takes place on the Tuesday afternoon, which also provides an opportunity for pre-sale viewing of entries for Wednesday’s high profile show and sale.

The 2013 Northern Limousin Extravaganza, with classes for both pedigree and commercial entries, will have a Scottish judge in Harry Emslie, of Peterhead, and has again attracted a host of sponsors, once more ensuring good prize money, including £125 for the overall champion and £75 for the reserve.
