European Commissioner opens the 2015 Royal Welsh Show

The 2015 Royal Welsh Show in Llanelwedd, Builth Wells was officially opened by Mr Owain Williams, a representative from the feature county of Gwent and Chair of Usk YFC, and Commissioner Phil Hogan, the new European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development.

Commissioner Hogan is a member of Jean-Claude Juncker's new European Commission which took office on 1 November 2014. He is responsible for implementation of the recently-agreed CAP reform, and ensuring that EU agricultural and rural development policies promote growth, investment and new jobs as well as contribute to energy efficiency and emissions reductions.

During his visit, the Commissioner met with organisations representing Welsh agriculture, took time to see the show and hosted a Q&A event where he discussed agricultural and rural issues in Wales, and gave his key messages on the future of agriculture in the European Union.

“The society was delighted to welcome Commissioner Hogan to the Royal Welsh Show” said David Lewis, the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society’s Chair of Council.

“In what must be a very busy first year for the commissioner, we are honoured that he is proving his commitment to Welsh farmers by visiting the show and taking the time to discuss the issues facing Welsh agriculture with our visitors.”

Commissioner Hogan said;
“I am particularly pleased to pay my first visit to the Royal Welsh Show and have the opportunity, to hear at first hand, the issues of concern to the Welsh farmers.

“The Royal Welsh Show is a showcase for Welsh agriculture and renowned Welsh food products, which the EU can support through its enhanced promotion budget.”

Crowds always flock to the first day of the four-day show including many visiting dignitaries from far and wide, all of whom have enjoyed the first day of what promises to be another great Royal Welsh Show.
