Check Out Supermarket Supplying

The importance of supermarkets to the farming industry will be highlighted in the next meeting of the Future Farmers of Yorkshire. The event, which is free, and open to all, takes place on Thursday 23 January at the Great Yorkshire Showground.

Sue Lockhart, Sainsbury’s Head of Agriculture, is one of three speakers giving different perspectives on the practicalities and opportunities for suppliers. Ms Lockhart will outline the supply chain opportunities and also the company’s aim to double the amount of British food on its shelves by 2020.

Joining her will be two producers who have grown their businesses from relatively small beginnings to supplying major blue chip companies. James Potter of Yorkshire Farmhouse Eggs is based near Thirsk and produces quality organic and free range eggs for many of the supermarket chains, whilst goats’ milk supplier Angus Wielkopolski, has grown the St Helen’s Farm brand substantially - the company is now the sole UK supplier of fresh goats’ milk to both Tesco and Sainsburys. They will give personal insights and share their experiences of working with major suppliers and growing their businesses.

Future Farmers of Yorkshire was launched in November 2010 and brings together younger farmers, vets and industry supporters to share knowledge, experiences and develop networks. Based at the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, events are organised throughout the year with key industry speakers.

The event, which is free, begins at 7.15pm with a light supper. For more information, contact Elizabeth Hudson, Project Manager at the Yorkshire Agricultural Society on 07702 598108
