Hampshire Down ewes met a solid commercial demand selling to a top of 880gns in Carlisle on Saturday 28 September at the breed association’s north west region official sale.
Sale leader at 880gns was the reserve champion, a shearling ewe by Maes-Glas Gladiator, out of a homebred ewe and in lamb to Lindsey Hunter. Bred and exhibited by Barry, Eirlys and Stuart Jones, Wolfscastle, Haverfordwest, she sold to Bethany Phillips, Blaydon-on-Tyne.

Another shearling ewe from the Jones family made 600gns to J and G Swainson,
Thursby, Carlisle. Sired by Maes-Glas Pacquiao, she was in lamb to the Royal
Welsh champion, Maes-Glas Commander.
The Jones family headed the ewe lamb section at 620gns with an Ardbrack Chancer
sired entry selling to Maud Blanchard, Avonbridge, Falkirk. Other lots in
the money from Maes-Glas was the champion, a shearling ram by Maes-Glas Peter
secured for 500gns by RJ and RJ Airey, Brownchesters, Otterburn.
The day’s second highest call of 650gns was made for a Glenrafon bred
aged ewe from Jennifer Borsey and Martin Sivill, Waen, St Asaph. Sired
by Kelsey Humphrey, out of a Ballyvester dam and sold in lamb to Owslebury
Kaiser Chief, she was knocked down sold to P and A Johnston, Knock,
Appleby.
The day’s second 620gns bid was made by RR and G Bainbridge, Ivegill,
Carlisle for a shearling ewe from Graham and Judith Galbraith, Endmoor,
Kendal. Sired by Kelsey Gigolo, she was out of a Ballycreelly bred ewe
and sold in lamb to Millfields Foyle. The same vendors offered another
shearling ewe at 550gns to J Tullie, Hawick. Sired by Teesdale Bruno
and out of a Lindsey bred dam, she was offered in lamb to their homebred
Graylen D’Artagnan. The Galbraiths also offered a ewe lamb at 500gns
by D’Artagnan and out of an Owslebury ewe to L Brown, Coldstream.
