Swangrove Pedigree Jersey Herd Wins Lily Hill Cup

The 140-cow Swangrove herd of pedigree Jerseys at Badminton in Gloucestershire is the winner of this year’s Lily Hill Cup. The trophy is presented to the highest placed Jersey herd in the RABDF/NMR Gold Cup.

The Swangrove herd averaged 6486kg milk at 5.23 per cent butterfat and 3.72 per cent milk protein in 2012, and it was the level of production which gave the herd the edge in the competition, according to Ian Macalpine, Jersey breeder and RABDF chairman, who was one of the judging panel. “The herd shows just what can be achieved from progressive breeding and good management with today’s Jerseys,” concluded Mr Macalpine.

The Swangrove herd forms part of the Badminton Estate, renowned for its annual three day event horse trials. The four-and-a-half thousand acres is made up of fifty per cent arable land with the remainder being parkland grazing. Three thousand sheep form the other livestock enterprise and the entire farming business is run by a team of only five.
