Easy Care Sheep Top at 1000gns at Worcester
2010-09-28

The continuing demand for Easy Care sheep was further strengthened at the second of the Society's sales, this time at Worcester on Saturday 25th September.

Strong demand for Easy Care Sheep at Worcester saw McCartneys auctioneer Clive Rhodes take bids of up to 1000gns for shearling rams and £142 for older ewes.

A yard full of sheep and wall to wall buyers ensured that trade and competition was spirited for all ages of ewes and rams with quality enjoying a hotly contested following. Auctioneer Clive Roads described the trade as "pleasingly buoyant" with the Easy Care Breed continuing to gain popularity across the country.

Sale leader at 1000gns was a shearling ram from R Owen's Trefri flock from North Wales and was secured by T W Steele, Pershore, Worcestershire, for use in his growing Pershore flock that run on Bredon Hill on the Worcestershire/Gloucestershire border.

Rams in general sold to a strong demand, if somewhat selective. Another shearling ram from H V and M W Thomas, Pentre, sold to 850gns to James Barton, Market Rabel, Lancashire.

Ewes and ewe lambs were particularly well supported from buyers travelling from across the country. Topping the female offering was a bid of £142 closely followed by pens from £128 to £140 for shearling ewes from W D and H J Prosser, Buckinghamshire. The top three pens were taken by H J S Honour, Charlton on Otmoor, Oxford.

Older ewes from T W Steele's Pershore flock recorded a similar trade to his 2009 draft with prices ranging from £130 down to £122.

Ewe lambs continued the strong interest with three pens from J A Parsons, Isle of Wight, selling at £127, £125 and £118 and all being bought by Messrs Jones, Kington, Herefordshire.

Averages:

519 flock ewes £118.21; 142 shearling ewes £125.99; 291 ewe lambs £98.53; 130 aged rams £194.05; 16 ram lambs £124.25 (auctioneers: McCartneys).
