Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 99 prime cattle, 19 OTM cattle, 5,223 prime hoggs and 4,977 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 6th March, 2008.

In the prime cattle section bullocks maintained late high rates and heifers were short of requirements and dearer on the week. Top price pf 160.5p for a Limousin heifer from Messrs Blaylock Hallburn to Messrs Malone, Edinburgh, others to 155.5p, 154.5p Englishtown, 154.5p Dashwellgreen, Blondes 156.5p Hallburn to Border Meats, Lockerbie. Charolais 150.5p Toppin Castle to M Wharton (Meats) Ltd, others 144.5p Wicketthorn.

Limousin bullocks to 158.5p from R M & P Armstrong, Slealands amd 156.5p Corby Castle Estates both to Messrs Nattrass, Butchers, Carlisle, others 153.5p The Gill, 151.5p Corby Castle. Belgian Blues 153.5p Corby Castle Estate, 152.5p, 151.5p Hallburn, Blondes 152.5p, 146.5p Hallburn. Salers 148.5p, 146.5p Hallburn, 147.5p Toppin Castle.

A smaller show of OTM again selling at high rates with Galloway bullocks selling to 120.5p and 112.5p (£897) Wyliesyke. Charolais cows to 97.5p (£770) Braehead, Limousins 93.5p (£776) The Becks, Friesian cows 90.5p (£724) The Stubb, Angus cows 83.5p (£551) The Becks. Angus bulls 90.5p (£751) Smallholms.

The prime hoggs were the dearest trade of the season so far selling to a large ring of buyers keen for well fleshed hoggs to average 132.5p per kilo overall.

Export hoggs averaged 136p to at top of 177p for Beltex from Messrs Brodie, Allfornaught, with top price per head £84.50 for Bleu de Maines from Calla Farm, £77 Rascarrel, Suffolks £73.80 Tinnis Hall, £70 Sceughdyke & Newton Farm, Cheviots £67.50 Newton, £64.80 Becks, Texels £80, £78 Rascarrel, £76.50 Newton, Charollais £73.50, £67.80 Leona Villa, Halfbreds £55 Craigdhu, Greyface £64.80 Sceughdyke, £61.80 Justicetown, Cheviot Mule £58.80 Kirtlebank, Blackfaces £66.20 Smalmstown, £62.80 Calla Farm, North Country Cheviots £64.80 Whins, £61.20 Kilfinnan, Swaledales £48.80 Newbiggin & Randalholme, Jacob £49.20 Craigdhu, Beltex £79.50 Easthouse.

The cast ewes and rams were a larger show with more buyers to the fore and as a result all classes were the best trade so far to average £44.21 overall.
