Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 86 prime cattle, 0 young bulls, 16 OTM cattle, 4,003 prime hoggs and 4,472 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 14th February, 2008.

All classes of clean cattle were dearer on the week to average 139.4p. Top price of 158.5p paid by C.M. Kirkpatrick for a Limousin heifer from J. & N. Blaylock & Son, Hallburn, others to 151.5p, 148.5p and 147.5p Englishtown, 147.5p Houghton House and Hallburn, 146.5p, 145.5p Englishtown; Belgian Blue 152.5p Hallburn, 149.5p Beckhall, 146.5p Guardrum, 144.5p Parcelstown; Charolais 144.5p Upper Mains, 143.5p Hallburn. Belgian Blue bullocks from J.C. & D. The 4,003 hoggs were forward to a larger ringside of buyers who were keen for well fleshed lambs which were in short supply.

Overall average of 123.2p per kilo overall and to a top of 146.2p per kilo for Texels from MacTaggart Bros., Castle Douglas and to £74.50 per head for Texels from J.K. Goldie, Townfoot and from A Morgan, Noss Farm. Lightweight hoggs (25-35 kilo) were well sought after and were the dearest trade thus far averaging 125.1p per kilo.
