Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 67 prime cattle, 3 young bulls, 39 OTM cattle, 4,828 prime lambs and 6,298 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 29th November, 2007.

All classes of clean cattle met a sharper trade with a top price of 134.5p for a Limousin heifer from W.G. & N.A. Lockhart, Wicket Thorn to W. Kirkup, Butcher, Longtown, others to 129.5p Wyseby Hill Cottage, 128.5p Wicket Thorn; Charolais 128.5p (twice) Hallburn, 126.5p Sceughdyke. Bullocks to 132.5p for a Belgian Blue from Hallburn; Limousin 131.5p Hallburn, 129.5p Nether Onsett; Charolais 129.5p and 127.5p Hallburn. Young bulls to 103.5p from Lawshall.

The 39 OTM cattle saw well fleshed sorts slightly dearer with plainer sorts the same as last week. Limousin bullocks to 91.5p Stormont. Angus cows to 63.5p Rinnion Hills; Limousin 62.5p The Side; Blonde d’Aquitaine 59.5p Greystoke; Blue Grey 56.5p Ladyhousesteads; Holstein 53.5p Hethermill.

The 4,828 prime lambs saw trade a lot firmer on the week with all classes keenly sought after. Quality types were in short supply. The sale was topped at £44.80 per head and 136.8p per kilo for Beltex lambs from Messrs Bell, Greenknowe. Beltex £41.80 Winterhope and Mouldyhills; Texel £41.20 Miller Hill, £40.80 Lighthouse; Suffolk £40.80 Tinnis Hall, £39.20 Boreland; Charollais £37.20 Hallburn, £37 Moss Side; North Country Cheviot £36.20 Longrow, £33.80 Meikle Whitriggs; Half Bred £34.80 Dodgsonstown; Greyface £35.20 North Deanhead, £33.80 D’Mainholm; Cheviot £34 Allerbeck, £33.80 Haithwaite; Blackface £29.20 Hillend and Riskinhope; Swaledale £28.80 Nookton.

The 839 light lambs were also keenly sought after with 30 kilo or less lambs in short supply. Top of £30.80 for Texels from Messrs Hogg, Ryehills. Blackface £29.80 Cramalt, £28.80 Harden; Charollais £28.20 Broomhouse; Greyface £26.80 The Park Farm; Suffolk £26.50 Fallside Farms; Swaledale £26.20 Greystoke Castle; Cheviot £25.80 Henderland.

The 6,298 cast ewes and rams were a larger show and with the usual buyers present trade was again on the rise on the week to average £26.46 overall. Top of £70.50 for heavy Texel ewes from North Deanhead; Beltex £56.50 Brae Edge; Leicester £52.50 Morley Hill; North Country Cheviot £48.50 Achscrabster; Suffolk cross £47.50 Waterloo; Charollais £45.50 Stackbraes; Greyface £45.50 Boreland; Cheviot Mule £39.50 Bloch. Hill ewes to £32.50 for Cheviots from Sorbietrees and for Blackfaces from Cowburnrigg; Swaledale £30 Morley Hill. Rams to £62.50 for Texel from East Mains; Suffolk £54.50 Kirkhouse; Leicester £54.50 Nunscleugh; North Country Cheviot £54.50 Redbanks; Beltex £48.50 Townfoot; Charollais £46 East Mains; Blackface £27.50 Fallside; Swaledale £26.50 Bayles.
