Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 55 prime cattle, 3 young bulls, 11 OTM cattle, 3,311 prime lambs and 4,596 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 15th November, 2007.

All classes were sharper on the week. Top price of 138.5p was paid by M Wharton, Blackbrow for a Limousin bullock from Messrs R Neill, Upper Tinwald, others to 133.5p from Faulding Cleugh, 130.5p Houghton House, Blonde bullocks from Faulding Cleugh to 134.5p, 130.5p to Woodhead Bros., Colne & Messrs Nattrass, Carlisle. Blonde heifers to 134.5p (£954.95) from Upper Tinwald to Messrs Nattrass, Charolais 129.5p Hallburn, Limousin 128.5p Hallburn, Simmental 128.5p Hallburn. Young bulls to 101.5p for Friesian from Whiteclose.

A small show of OTM were dearer on the week and short of requirements with Belgian Blues to 88.5p from Branteth. Limousin to 86.5p High Dubwath, Charolais 63.5p Branteth, Friesian 57.5p Newby.

Good quality lambs 38 – 45 kg were dearer on the week and keenly sought after. Most classes were up 5p/kg on the week. The sale average was 79p. Top price was £48.80 for a Texel from Stackbraes who also was top price per kilo at 110.9p.

Other Texels £43.80 Ashley Park, Colter Coats and £42.80 Old Wall. Suffolk x £42.20 Swainsteads, £41.80 The Dyke, Cheviots £32.80 Catslackburn, Bleu de Maines £36.20 Solwaybank, Charollais £39.80 Netherton, £38 Mosside, £37 Newtown, Halfbreds £36.80 High Moat, Greyfaces £37.20, £35.80 Stooprigg, £32.80 Nunscleugh, Blackfaces £34.50 Catslackburn, £28 Penpeugh, North Country Cheviots £33 Mid Calder, Beltex £40 D’Mainholm.

Light lambs were also in demand and good well fleshed lambs proved easy to cash and were short of requirements to a top of 105.2p per kilo for Blackface lambs from Scabcleugh. Cheviots £32.80, £29.20 Newington Avenue, Greyfaces £29.80 Naddle, Blackfaces £35.80 Scabcleugh, £34.80 Debog, North Country Cheviots £33.20 Naddle, Swaledales £20.80 Naddle.

The cast ewes and rams were a smaller entry with more buyers operating and trade was up £2 per head on the week to average £23.57 overall.

Top was £64.50 for Texel ewes from Stackbraes, others to £62.50 Finchley, £60.50 Westmillhills. Beltex £56.50 Stackbraes, Charollais £54.50 Easthouse, Suffolks £51.50 Easthouse, Suffolk x £48.50 Stackbraes, Halfbreds £38 Finchley, North Country Cheviots £47.50 Mid Calder, Leicesters £42.50 Drinkstone, Cheviot Mules £35.50 Stackbraes, Greyfaces £34.50 Enthorn, £33.50 Stackbraes, Mashams £36.50 Stackbraes.

Hill ewes to £33.50 for Cheviots from Clerkhill, Blackfaces £24.50 Broomhope & Horseholm, Swaledales £22.50 Stackbraes.

Rams to £62.50 for Leicesters from Stackbraes, Texels £57.50 Mid Calder, Cheviots £57.50 Sandside, Suffolks £55.50 Boreland, Blackfaces £20 Boreland & Stackbraes, Swaledales £17.50 Sanders Close.
