Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 26 prime cattle, 3 young bulls, 18 OTM cattle, 3,497 prime lambs and 5,181 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 8th November, 2007.

Prime cattle were short of requirements with trade firmer. Charolais heifers from T. Armstrong & Son, Sceughdyke sold to 130.5p to Woodhead Bros., others from the same to 127.5p, 125.5p and 123.5p; Limousin 128.5p, 124.5p, 123.5p Wicket Thorn. Limousin bullocks to 127.5p from Nether Onsett, 118.5p The Gill; Charolais 117.5p Smallholms.

Young bulls to 104.5p and 103.5p for Limousins from Dumbretton.

OTM’s were easier selling to 55.5p for a Limousin heifer from The Hagg. Limousin cows to 49.5p Nunscleugh; Angus 34.5p Kilnhill.

With 3,497 prime lambs forward saw trade sharper on the week but good quality 38-46 kilo farm assured lambs were in short supply. The sale was topped at £43.20 for Texels from W. McConnell, Gass Farm, Glenluce and to 114p per kilo for Beltex from Stackbraes. Lightweight lambs were in demand with good quality continental lambs keenly sought after to a top of £34.50 for Beltex from Stackbraes. Texel £31.80 Debog; Cheviot Mule £31.20 Red House; Suffolk £30.80 Gibbs Hill; Blackface £29.50 Peela Hill; Cheviot £27 Glendinning; Greyface £26.50 Upperburnmouth.

The 5,181 cast ewes and rams were another large show and with the usual buyers present all classes maintained late high rates with quality ewes scarcer.
