Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 80 prime cattle, 6 young bulls, 14 OTM cattle, 3,953 prime lambs and 4,356 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 2nd August, 2007.

The prime cattle were similar. Limousin heifers topped at 142.5p from Upper Mains and purchased by Wm Kirkup, Butcher, Longtown, 140.5p Newby Farm to S Wilson, Family Butcher, Corby Hill, Charolais to 129.5p Keld Head, Simmentals 121.5p Wicketthorn. Limousin bullocks to 136.5p, 135.5p, 133.5p Hallburn, 132.5p Dashwellgreen, Houghton House & Hallburn. Charolais 125.5p Sceughdyke. Belgian Blues 125.5p Hallburn.

Young bulls to 108.5p for Limousin from Enzieholm, Hereford 106.5p, 104.5p Enzieholm, Luing 107.5p, 106.5p Nunnerie Farm.

OTM Friesian heifers to 70.5p from Justicetown, Cows to 71.5p for Limousin from Sceughdyke, Angus 67.5p Albierigg, Bluegreys 65.5p Dodgsonstown, Friesians 62.5p Smalmstown.

Prime lambs were a quality show and with buyers keen a very satisfactory trade resulted to average 116.5p. Top quality lambs were short of requirements selling around the 130p mark to a top of 136.4p for Texel x from Howgillside Farmers. Top price per head was £62.20 for Texel x from Messrs Acton, Braidley Farm, others to £62 Carlatton Demense, Suffolks £55 Hallburn, £54.20 Dashwellgreen, £54 Stanley House, Charollais £50 Waterside, Greyface £48.80 Nunscleugh, £48.60 Harelawhill, £47.50 Nook (Forster), Halfbreds £52.70 Burnfoot on Esk, Cheviot Mules £48 Dinley, Oxford £46.20 Guards, Hill Cheviots £45 Eldinhope.

Light lambs were a smaller entry with trade again good to a top of 122.6p for Sufolks from Milnholm with many pens over 120p. Top price per head was £42.90 for Suffolks from Milnholm. Texels £42.80 Pennine View, Charollais £39.20 Haithwaite Lane, Greyface £35 Midtodhills, Lleyns £40.50 Meikle Richorn, Blackfaces £34 Drumcork.

With more buyers present the cast ewes and rams met a dearer trade on the week. Top was £67.50 for heavy Texel ewes from East Mains & Suffolks from Finchley, others Texels £66.50 Enthorn, £65.50 Howgillside, Roadside & Whitchesters. Suffolk x £56.50 Finchley, North Country Cheviot £53.50 Buckies, Charollais £64.50 Ballyclare, Bleu de Maines £65.50 Roadside, Leicesters £57.50 Bellmount, Beltex £49.50 Winterhope, Cheviot Mules £46.50 Ormiston, Greyface £47.50 Balgray, £46.50 Roadside, Halfbreds £50.50 Linton House, Masham £37.50 Coltcoats, Gritstones £37.50 Stackbraes.

Hill ewes £35.50 for Cheviots from Whitchesters, £32.50 Whitcastle, Blackfaces £32.50 Skelfhill, £30.50 Mossfennan, Swaledales £27.50 Nunscleugh, Beulah £30 Whitcastles.
