Aberdeen-Angus females met a brisk trade at the third annual “Border Blacks” on-farm sale at Wedderlie, Gordon, Berwickshire, on Saturday (October 8).
Females from the Wedderlie herd of host breeders, J and J Campbell, sold to a top of 6500gns and achieved a total clearance to average £1901.66 for 36 lots.
The top price was paid for the four year old cow, Wedderlie Evening Most A183, by Cudlobe Fortune 32H, and her bull calf by Tui Eriexis. The buyer to establish a new herd was J S Mullen, Teasdale Cottage, Slaley, Hexham, Northumberland, who bought several other lots, including the five year old, Wedderlie Princessa Z033, by HF Dreamstreet 21F, and her heifer calf by Wedderlie Blackadder Z093, at 3500gns.
Well-known Simmental breeders, Tony and Philida Hurn, who are building up a herd of Aberdeen-Angus at Beck Farm, Calthorpe, Norwich, Norfolk, got the sale off to a flying start by paying the second highest price of 4200gns for the first animal in the ring, the five year old, Wedderlie Princelle Z110, and her heifer calf by Wedderlie Blackbest A243.
They also paid 4000gns for the two year old heifer, Wedderlie Ebblora C521, by Wedderlie Blackadder Z093, and her heifer calf by Rawburn No Limits 5N, and 3300gns for the five year old, Wedderlie Nestia Z102, by Tui Blackmark, and her heifer calf by Wedderlie Negrom A200.
A heifer of only 25 months, Wedderlie Eriexada C628, with a six week old bull calf at foot by Rawburn No Limits 5N, realised 3500gns to J and E Logan, Pirntaton Farm, Fountainhall, Galashiels, Selkirkshire, who also took another heifer by Blackadder, the two year old Wedderlie Pricelba C660, at 3000gns.
Others from Wedderlie sold to 2700gns for another two year old heifer, Wedderlie Necessary C677, by Wedderlie Blackbest A243, to Macmerry specialist catering butcher, John Gilmour, Macmerry, East Lothian, who bought six lots for his new herd at Mosstowers, Kelso, Roxburghshire, and 2400gns for the seven year old cow, Wedderlie Priveda, by HF Dreamstreet 21F, and her heifer calf by Wedderlie Blackbest A243, to F J Fraser and Son, Newton of Idvies, Forfar, Angus.
A 560kg pure-bred steer sold for £830 to the Black Bull Hotel, Lauder, current holders of the award for the best pub in Scotland.
A guest consignment of three heifers from breed president, John Elliot, Roxburgh Mains, Kelso, Roxburghshire, sold to 3500gns for the two year old, Rawburn Erica C234, by Rawburn Transformer, to J and E Logan, 3000gns for the two year old, Huxton Evensong C138, by Rawburn El Cid Z432, to Finlay Munro, Balaldie, Fearn, Ross-shire, and 2800gns for the yearling, Rawburn Evening Star D292, by the 25,000gns Wedderlie Netmark A281, to Mr Mullen.
The offering from B Q Farming Partnership Ltd, Bowhill, Selkirk, sold to 2500gns for the two year old, Eildon Best Maid C395, by Mosston Muir Dual Transformer Z001, to J and E Logan, and 2400gns for the yearling, Tofts Polly Pride D611, by Blelack Lord Hildalgo A234, from Playfair Farms, Morebattle Tofts, Kelso, to A and C Armour and Sons, Dromore, Co Down, Northern Ireland.
Consignments from D G and C Lucas, Cheeklaw, Duns, Berwickshire, sold to 1300gns, Miss Elizabeth Bayne-Jardine, Hattonhill, Humbie, East Lothian, to 1200gns, and Messrs T H Brewis, Eastfield of Lempitlaw, Kelso, to 800gns.
Embryos from Bova-Gen Ltd, Roxburgh Mains, Kelso, sold to 680gns for three from the cow, Royal Eston Anne 23J, and 350gns for five from the cow, Cudlobe Ellen Erica 46D, to John Lascelles, Balmachie, Carnoustie, Angus.
