More than 20 hopefuls battled it out for the top titles in the fourth Yorkshire Dales Annual Hedge Laying Competition, which was held at March Hall in Dentdale.

The event was organised by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority (YDNPA) and the Lancashire and Westmorland Hedge Laying Association in partnership with the Friends of the Lake District as part of the Association’s Lancashire and Westmorland Grand Prix.

Paul Wilkinson, the YNDPA’s Area Ranger for Cumbria, said: “In total there were 22 contestants all working well under wet, cold and windy weather conditions, to produce laid sections of hedge in an excellent condition.

“In addition to the competition, an element of training in the craft of hedge laying in the Lancashire and Westmorland style was introduced for the first time this year as part of the Rural Skills Cumbria ‘Work the View’ programme, which funded the day.

“Two professional hedge layers were on site to show people interested in learning the skill how it is done.

“Our thanks go out to all of those people involved with the event, especially our hosts at March Hall and judges Edmund Capstick and James Middleton for their most valued contribution to the success of the day.”

The Rural Skills Cumbria project is part funded by the European Agriculture Fund of Rural Development: Europe investing in rural areas.

The prize winners for each category were:

Championship – 1. Robert Bell, 2. Peter Gibson, who is the country’s Supreme Champion, 3. William Hodgson.

Open – 1. Max Roclawski, 2. Hadrian Higginson, 3. Heath Charnock.

Novice – 1. Craig Procter, 2. John Gibson, 3. Jon Oliver.

Junior – 1. Matthew Atkinson, 2. Martin Woof 3. Jack Carradice.

The best hedger on the field was Robert Bell and the best re-growth from the 2010 event was won by Mark Lavender.
