Charolais cattle were in great demand by the packed ringside who had assembled for the Wesley Estates on-farm dispersal sale, with bids peaking at 10,000gns and cattle selling to all corners of the United Kingdom to all the major livestock producing areas, on Saturday 1 October.

Leading the dispersal was the three year old stock bull Balymle Dingle TI+60, SRI+62, sired by the 30,000gns Dingle Hofmeister he was knocked down sold at 10,000gns to N F Massie and Sons, Blelack, Aberdeenshire. Mr Massie remarked: “Dingle offers excellent figures combined with good looks and importantly he is proven within the Wesley herd. You could go up to Scotland and spend twice the price for a bull that hasn’t been proven, so for me it was a no brainer.”
Paving the way in the female section was Wesley Acute TI+45, SRI+37, a Maerdy Rock daughter, selling for 8,000gns with her six month old heifer calf Wesley Glamorous TI+45, SRI+37, sired by Balthayock Aesop, to W D Connolly, Ballynahinch, County Down.
Two lots sold at the 7,000gns mark. Wesley Babe TI+45, SRI+36, went under the gavel for 7,000gns to N Caul, Kirkton of Auchterhouse, Angus. This Thrunton Trojan daughter was sold with her bull calf Wesley Galleon, sired by Balmyle Dingle. At the same price a yearling bull Wesley Forceful TI+41, SRI+41 by Balthayock Matthew was secured by A Orr-Ewing, Swindon, Wiltshire.
Mr Caul purchased further lots in the shape of nine month old bulls Wesley Gasket TI+49, SRI+51 and Wesley Gallant TI+44, SRI+47 both for 5,800gns by Balmyle Dingle, and in calf heifer Wesley Daffodil TI+36, SRI+36 for 4,000gns. Young bulls continued with nine month old Wesley Furnish TI+38, SRI+40, a Balthayock Aesop son, selling to 6,000gns to Mr and Mrs A White, Swanage, Dorset and eight month old Wesley Goran TI+46, SRI+46 by Balmyle Dingle going for a bid of 4,800gns to J Preece and Sons, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.
Back in the female section Wesley Alpine TI+39, SRI+31 realised 6,400gns selling to Haw and Trim Partners, Bere Regis, Dorset. This Thrunton Trojan daughter was sold with her 6 month old heifer calf Wesley Gallery by Balthayock Aesop. The same buyers also made a bid of 4,700gns for Wesley Velocity TI+31, SRI+33 selling with her six month old heifer calf Wesley Generosity by Balmyle Dingle.
The Reserve Supreme Champion at the 2011 Three Counties National Show, Wesley Euphoria TI+46, SRI+34, by Thrunton Trojan and scanned in calf to Balthayock Aesop was knocked down sold to J McGrath, Omagh, County Tyrone, for 5,200gns.
Three lots were secured by bids of 5,000gns. Wesley Beautiful, TI+27, SRI+34 by Thrunton Trojan was bought with her six month old bull calf, Wesley General by Balthayock Aesop, by P R and M A Hooper, Lanreath, Cornwall. Warwickshire based breeders Trivett and Son, Atherstone made a bid of 5,000gns to secure Wesley Charlotte TI+48, SRI+49, a Balthayock Matthew daughter, with her three month old heifer calf Wesley Gravity, by Balthayock Aesop. Top maiden heifer went to the show heifer Wesley Fallow TI+42, SRI+41, out of the sale’s leading female Wesley Acute and by Balthayock Aesop going for the same price to R and E Hall and Son, Driffield, East Yorkshire. Maiden heifers continued with Wesley Finite TI+37, SRI+38 by Balthayock Aesop and out of Wesley Tranquil, a dam who has bred bulls selling to £5,000, under the gavel for 4,000gns to T W Cox, Bakewell, Derbyshire.
Wesley Verify TI+38, SRI+38 by Balthayock Matthew realised 4,600gns to C J Wight, Biggar, Lanarkshire. Next came a Thrunton Trojan sired two year old, Wesley Delicious TI+27, SRI+24, to a call of 4,500gns from R McInnes and J McMillan, Kings Lynn, Cambridgeshire. Another Trojan daughter, Wesley Cala TI+37, SRI+28, was secured by G J and C D Smith, Liskeard, Cornwall for 4,400gns with her five month old bull calf Wesley Guard by Balmyle Dingle.
A bid of 4,100gns was made for Wesley Velvet TI+21, SRI+18 sired by Maerdy Rock by D R Stacey, St Austell, Cornwall and her six month old bull calf Wesley Genius, another Balmyle Dingle son.
Three in calf cows were knocked down sold for 4,000gns. Wesley Beauty TI+53, SRI+42 sired by Maerdy Rock went first to D W North, Lincoln, Lincolnshire followed by her half-sister Wesley Vera TI +36, SRI+25 and her fostered-on five month old heifer calf Wesley Graceful by Balmyle Dingle for the same price to T Jones and Son, Carmarthen, Wales.
Thrunton Trojan daughter Wesley Bee TI+31, SRI+25 and her four month old bull calf Wesley Graduate by Balthayock Aesop were the final lot to 4,000gns selling to E R Hollingsworth, Middleton, Greater Manchester.
British Charolais Cattle Society chief executive David Benson comments: “It was the finest sale of Charolais cattle that I’ve seen in a long time with all lots selling strongly, young stock selling particularly well and good averages reached overall.”
