Hampshire Downs Set Ewe Lamb Record at Carlisle

Hampshire Downs met a buoyant trade and established a new 1,050gns ewe lamb breed record at the breed association’s North West Region Ewe and Ram sale on Saturday 24 September at Carlisle.

Sale leader at 1,050gns was a ewe lamb by Ballycreelly Montgomery from G and J Galbraith, Kendal, Cumbria selling to R Brand, East Fortune, North Berwick who also took home a same way bred in lamb shearling ewe for 600gns and a Kelsey Gigolo sired ewe lamb at 500gns from the Galbraiths.

Mr Brand went on to secure two in lamb ewes from J P and R M Henry, Thropton, Northumberland. First was an Oslebury Xavier daughter for 420gns followed by another ewe sired by Pode Hole Cambridge for 300gns. Both are in lamb to service sire Thorbeck Thor.

Second best price of the day went to K P and A E McCarthy, Comber, County Down for their Ballycreelly shearling ewe by Yarcombe Reference at 640gns to I and A Burgess, New Abbey, Dumfries who also purchased a Yarcombe Topper sired ewe lamb from the same breeders for 400gns.

Three further lots from the McCarthys were bid to 400gns each, First to hit the mark was a Yarcombe Reference sired shearling ewe in lamb to Ballycreelly Nobleman to H J Bury, Bolton by Bowland, Lancashire. Also at 400gns were two ewe lambs, one sired by Glanrafon George and one by Yarcombe Topper, both going home with A D Fotheringham, Forteviot, Perthshire. They also took home a Raburn ewe for 280gns from J P and R M Henry. This Pode Hole Cambridge daughter was sold as in lamb to Thorbeck Thor.

Rams sold to 300gns twice. A Ballycreelly shearling sired by Moneycarragh Millionaire was the first go for the McCarthys selling to M J Moore, Brackley, North Hampshire, followed by a Kelsey Gigolo sired ram lamb at 300gns to J Kelly, Maroun, Isle of Man for G and J Gilbraith.

Averages: Females: 3 ewes £350, 3 shearling ewes £574, 5 ewe lambs £577.50. Males: 1 shearling ram £315, 1 ram lamb £315.
