Elizabeth Reigns Supreme in Holstein All-Britain Awards
28/07/08

Cumbrian cattle breeders Ian and Mark Mallinson have cause for a double celebration this week with the announcement that two of their prize animals have been named as recipients of Holstein UK’s 2007 All-Britain Awards.

Carhall Lyster Elizabeth Ex and her daughter, Carhall Jordan Elizabeth, were crowned champions of the cattle-breeding world by both scooping individual titles following a series of show winning successes last year.

Holstein UK National Show Grand Champion, Lyster Elizabeth, is no stranger to success having previously been awarded All-Britain Heifer status in 2005. The prize winning animal has this time been crowned 2007 All-Britain Junior Second Calved Cow. Lyster Elizabeth has the unique distinction of breeding a daughter that has followed in her footsteps by simultaneously taking an All-Britain Heifer Award as well as a National Show Championship.

The home-bred animals are owned by father and son, Ian and Mark, who farm at Armathwaite, Carlisle. The All-Britain selection panel comprised the individual judges who officiated at the four major Royal Shows in 2007. The selection panel then reduced the original 100 entries to a final 42 animals, which in turn, received the votes of all 45 members of the Society’s national judging panel.

The results of the voting poll were this week warmly welcomed by Ian. “It’s tremendous to have lifted two All-Britain titles in the same year with a mother and daughter combination. It’s especially rewarding to have bred and developed the cow family over the years and we look forward to breeding the next generation with immense interest. I would also like to thank Glyn Lucas for preparing and leading both animals at the National Holstein Show,” he said.

Borderway auctioneer Glyn has prepared and shown animals in Europe, Canada and the US and rates the family as one of the best he’s ever exhibited over the past fifteen years. “Elizabeth is an exceptional animal and truly represents the best in terms of breeding that Britain has to offer. It was an honour to have led this cow to such phenomenal success,” he says.

One of the headliner animals already entered in Europe’s most prestigious cattle sale is a Braedale Goldwyn daughter of Lyster Elizabeth. The Borderway Black and White Sale takes place on November 29th at Carlisle and the event is expected to create huge interest states Glyn.

“Any daughter being offered for sale from a UK National Holstein Show Champion will generate interest within the cattle-breeding world. We are aiming to offer 80 to 100 elite pedigree animals and anticipate several Red and White Holstein and Jersey heifers again being featured as part of the sale. We therefore urge vendors to contact our pedigree department as soon as possible with details of potential sale entries,” he concluded.
