Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 73 prime cattle, 2 OTM cattle, 4,510 prime lambs and 2,791 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 20th December, 2007.

The 73 prime cattle forward met a firm trade for a poorer show for quality, selling to a top of 135.5p for a Limousin heifer from Maulscastle Farming to Woodhead Bros., others to 132.5p Slealands and Maulscastle, 131.5p Englishtown and Hallburn; Belgian Blue 134.5p Maulscastle; Charolais 132.5p Hallburn, 127.5p Sceughdyke, 125.5p Wicket Thorn. Limousin bullocks to 134.5p and 132.5p Maulscastle, 131.5p Hallburn, 128.5p The Beeches; Charolais 126.5p, 125.5p (x2), 124.5p Hallburn; Belgian Blue 126.5p The Gill.

OTM cattle sold to 54.5p for a Friesian from Jerriestown.

4,510 head of prime lambs were forward at Longtown on Thursday where a full ringside of buyers ensured the dearest trade since before foot and mouth.

The sale was topped at £53.20 for a pen of Charollais lambs from Messrs Harrison, Aldermanseat and for a pen of Texels from Tinnis Hall, and to 116.9p per kilo for a pen of Beltex from Messrs Hewson, Jerriestown, Blackford.

Light lambs up to 34 kilos were again a large show and in good demand with good, well fleshed types easily cashed at recent high rates. The 2,971 cast ewes and rams were a smaller show due to the Christmas holidays, never the less all classes maintained late rates to average £27.77 overall.
