Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 83 prime cattle, 18 young bulls, 15 OTM cattle, 2,920 prime lambs and 5,195 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 19th July, 2007.

All classes of prime cattle were dearer on the week. Top price of 135.5p, 134.5p and 133.5p for Limousin bullocks from A. & W.J. Taylor & Son, Dashwellgreen, others 133.5p Hallburn, 131.5p Becton Hall and Dashwellgreen, 130.5p and 129.5p Nether Onsett. A smaller show of heifers were short of requirements selling to 131.5p for a Limousin from K.H. & J. Preston, Keldhead, others 128.5p Wyseby Hill Cottage. Heavyweight Charolais heifers to 127.5p E & A. Graham, Upper Mains.

Young bulls were also dearer to 118.5p and 114.5p for Belgian Blues from D. & L. Graham, South Lambhill; Limousin 116.5p T. & M. Irving, Becton Hall; Hereford 105.5p M.P. Tattersall, Enzieholm; Black & White 98.5p T.B. Imrie, Harelawhole.

A smaller show of OTM cattle sold to 91.5p (£846) for a Charolais cow from Fawcettlees; Belgian Blue 90.5p Crofthead; Black & White 66.5p (£512) Becton Hall. Limousin bullocks to 92.5p Sceughdyke. Limousin heifers to 91.5p Clarghyll.

A large show of prime lambs saw all buyers keener as a result and all classes were dearer than expected to average 109p overall to a top of 129p for Texels from Mossband.

Top price per head was £60.40 for Texel x vrom D W Scott, Stanley House, Suffolks £54 Wallend, Bleu de Maines £55.20 Branxholm Town, Halfbreds £48.50 Adderston Shiels, LLeyns £41.10 Satchell, Greyfaces £46.40 Nunscleugh, Oxford £47 Guards, Blackfaces £38.70 Penpeugh & Hawthorns.

Light lambs met a great trade to average 114.3p overall. Top price was £43.90 for Texels from Mossband House, Suffolks £38.40 Hallburn, Charollais £40.70 Brackenthwaite, Cheviots £38.70 Hawthorns, Cheviot Mules £37.10 Stackbraes, Greyfaces £36.80 High Airryolland, Blackfaces £35.70 Penpeugh, Zwartbles £37.90 Stackbraes, Jacobs £35.80 Old Chapel, Herdwicks £33.50 Haithwaite.

There were more distant buyers present for the largest show of 5,195 cast ewes and rams this season, with trade similar on the week to average £35.53. Top of £68.50 for heavy Texel ewes from Stackbraes, others £67.50 Mossburnfort, £66.50 Newry and Redbanks; Beltex £64.50 Balgray; Leicester £53.50 Dreva; Suffolk cross £52.50 Woodk; Bleu d’Maine £52.50 Roadside; Charollais £52.50 Ballyclare; Half Bred £50 Newry; North Country Cheviot £49.50 Earlside; Greyface £43.50 Wyseby Hill Cottage and Baurch, £40.50 Stackbraes and Burnmouth; Masham £37.50 Colter Coats.

Hill ewes to £45 for Cheviots from Remington; Swaledale £36.50 Remington; Blackface £35.50 Armbrack; Herdwick £29.50 Fordlands; Jacob £29.50 Mossband House. Rams to £70.50 for a Texel from Newry; Leicester £70 Croglin High Hall; Charollais £63.50 Woodfoot; Suffolk £61 Colter Coats; Dorset £53.50 Lydden; Beltex £48 Woodfoot; Blackface £43.50 Penpeugh; Cheviot £42.50 Stackbraes; Swaledale £30.50 Ravenwood.
