08/11/06

Strong demand for Limousin youngstock underpinned a buoyant trade at the Annual Limousin Weaned Calf Sale held at Harrison & Hetherington’s Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Friday 3rd November 2006. Bull calves sold to an average of £1026, up over £300 on the year; heifer calves did similarly well selling at £1013 per head up almost £200 on last year for 10 more sold.

Punching his way to the top at 6,200gns was the rising six month old bull calf Langanby Boxer brought forward by JB Holliday & Sons, Town Head Farm, Langwathby, Penrith, Cumbria. Sired by Dentox Uppercut and out of Cloughhead Ribbon, new owners are AJ & FM Harrison, Grange Hall, Great Asby, Appleby, Cumbria.

Another bull calf, Glenrock Bingo, consigned by Stephen Illingworth, Howgillside, Eaglesfield, Lockerbie, Dumfries made 3,000gns. Robb & MacDonald, Flemington Farm, Cumbuslang, Glasgow purchased this January 2006 born son of Totem and out of Glenrock Pixie. January 2006 born, this bull calf had a Beef Value of LM+22 alongside a Calving Value of LM+2C putting him easily in the top 25% of breed.

Third best in the male calves section was the 1,900gns Lowbarn Bamelar brought out by Mr RFS Newall, Low Barns, Wall, Hexham, Northumberland. Just eight months old, he is sired by Cloughhead Organic and out of Sarkley Pamela and was snapped up for 1,900gns by RR Hughes, Fron Isa, Gaerwen, Anglesey.

Two heifer calves from Messrs AH & GW Roberts, Hafod Las, Ysbyty Ifan, Betws-Y-Coed, Conwy went under the hammer for 3,800gns. Both sired by the French bull Saphir, the first of these was Hafodlas Bambi who is out of the dam Penrhos Uptowngirl when knocked down to an undisclosed buyer. Born in January 2006 her Beef Value was LM+20. Purchasers of the second Saphir daughter, Hafodlas Beti, who is out of the dam Hafodlas Sara were MA & SJ Harryman, Keskadale, Newlands Valley, Keswick also for 3,800gns.

The Hafodlas prefix continued its successful outing with bids of 2,800gns and 1,650gns for two further heifer calves, again Saphir daughters. Messrs Pears, Fellside House Farm, Caldbeck, Wigton, Cumbria were final bidders at 2,800gns for the rising nine month old female, Hafodlas Beca, whose dam is Hafodlas Sonia.
