    ASDA Extends Local Sourcing Scheme
22/10/05

The new range will bring 44 new local products, direct from 14 local producers to the supermarket shop floor, reflecting ASDA's commitment to Britain's smallest suppliers. In addition to this, 35 products, already on sale in a selection of ASDA stores across the North West, will be extended to a further 8 stores across the region.

ASDA will work alongside existing hub supplier - Plumgarths, who currently run ASDA's 'Best of the Lakes' hub from their farmshop premises in Kendal. In addition to the 19 Cumbrian producers Plumgarths currently work with, the North West launch will introduce a further 14 suppliers to the hub from the North West region.

Plumgarths, owned by Cumbrian livestock farmer, John Geldard have been working with ASDA for over three years, when the first ASDA local sourcing hub was launched alongside John and his team in the Lake District. The hub initiative aimed to bring the best locally produced food and drink direct to the supermarket shop floor and signalled a dramatic change in the way supermarkets work with Britain's smallest suppliers.

John Geldard said, “We are delighted that the Plumgarths/ASDA's local sourcing initiative is progressing not only to Lancashire, but also extending the range to stores in Cumbria. We are encouraged that ASDA is continuing to place considerable support behind local sourcing. We believe that demand for local food will continue to grow as consumers become increasingly interested in what they eat and enthusiastic about its source of origin.”

Karen Todd, ASDA's local sourcing manager says, “Our relationship with Plumgarths has grown from strength to strength and we're extremely excited about stepping things up a gear. 'Best of the North West' will provide even more of our customers with truly local products. This has been the number one request from customers over the years and we are sure that these products will go straight to the top of our customers shopping lists.”
