The aim of the organisation is "to promote livestock industry in Japan through development and application of new biotechnologies which permit production of high quality and safe animal products in a rational farm management system, The National Livestock Breeding Center (NLBC) works for the sound development of livestock industries in Japan."

 
         
      A National Livestock Breeding Station was established as long ago as 1872, and at one time there were a total of 33 around the country. The headquarters of the National Livestock Breeding Center plans and coordinates the activities of its now 11 stations.
