A potential seventh generation VG/EX Picston Shottle daughter attracted a top price of 3,800gns at this week’s Holstein NI show and sale, held at the Pedigree Sales Arena, Moira.
The champion and 3,800gns top priced heifer at Holstein NI's March show and sale was Ardmore Shottle Jill 2 bred by William Crawford, Brookeborough. Adding their congratulations are James Patterson, Crumlin, judge; and Adrian Bates, Teemore Engineering, sponsor.
Trade was brisk for quality heifers, and following a 90% clearance Taaffe Auctions confirmed that 38 heifers changed hands to average £2,383 per head – an increase of £633 on this time last year.
Hitting the headlines in both the show and sale rings was Ardmore Shottle Jill 2 (PLI £129), a January 2010 born Picston Shottle daughter exhibited by the father and son team of William and James Crawford, Brookeborough, County Fermanagh.
She is bred from the Bosside Ruben daughter, Ardmore B Ruben Jill EX91 3E, which produced an average of 13,898kgs at 3.73%BF and 3.11%P in five 305-day lactations. Calved 28 days and yielding 42kgs daily, she sold to a pedigree herd based in County Tyrone.
Judge James Patterson, Crumlin, described the champion as a very correct heifer with a super udder. The pre-sale show was generously sponsored by Teemore Engineering, with sales representative Adrian Bates presenting the rosettes and congratulating the winners.
Second highest price of the day 3,000gns, was paid to Sam and John McCormick, Bangor, County Down, for the October 2009 born Hilltara Bolivia Maude 2. Sired by Magor Bolivia Allen, her dam is the VG86 Hilltara Leduc Maude 3. This potential ninth generation VG/EX heifer sold to John O’Brien from Poyntzpass, County Down.
Next best at 2,880gns was Hilltara Bonair Charlotte 2, a January 2010 born heifer also consigned by the McCormick duo. Sired by the Comestar LHeros son, Karona Bonair, she is bred from the GP83 Hilltara Talent L Charlotte ET. Buyer was George Anderson from Drumbo, Lisburn, County Down.
George Anderson also paid out 2,850gns to secure Hilltara Laurin Reann for his Cairnview herd. Born in December 2009, she was sired by Den K Marshall LL Laurin, and is bred from the VG87 Hilltara Triumphant Reann 3 ET, which gave over 10,500kgs at 4.19%BF and 3.02%P in her fifth 305-day lactation.
Sam and John McCormick sold five heifers from their noted Hilltara herd to average £2,674 each.
Geoffrey Patton, Carrowdore, County Down, realised 2,750gns for the February 2010 born Carrowcroft Rock N Roll Primrose (PLI £58). She was sired by the home-bred Carrowcroft Rock N Roll, a Jenny Lou Marshall son, while her dam is the GP84 Carrowcroft Lucente Primrose. This third prize winner caught the eye of John O’Brien from Poyntzpass.
Four lots came under the hammer of auctioneer Michael Taaffe at 2,700gns.
First into the salering at 2,700gns was the third prize winning Inch Shottle Daphne 12 (PLI £122), brought out by Jim Morrison, Downpatrick, County Down. Sired by Picston Shottle, she is bred from Inch Blackisle Daphne 2 ET EX, which is projected to give over 10,500kgs at 5.48%BF and 3.24%P in her fourth lactation. This potential fifth generation VG/EX heifer joins a County Tyrone herd.
Jim and Charlotte Stevenson, Kilkeel, County Down, realised 2,700gns for the second prize winning Newry Mahogany Begonia (PLI £54). Born in November 2009, she is by the Picston Shottle son, Green Corner Mahogany. Buyer was William Herron from Newtownhamilton, County Armagh.
Mr Herron also paid out 2,700gns to secure Ardmore Bolivia Pippin, a January 2010 born heifer from Wiliam and James Crawford’s herd. Sired by Magor Bolivia Allen, this potential seventh generation VG/EX heifer is bred from the VG87 Ardmore Primrose Pippin, which gave over 11,600kgs at 3.84%BF and 3.09%P in her fourth 305-day lactation.
Harry Patton and Sons, Newtownards, County Down, realised 2,700gns for the January 2010 born Ards Russell Monica (PLI £79). Sired by the Braedale Goldwyn son, Ards Russell, this heifer is bred from the Duncan Progress daughter, Ards Progress Monica VG87, which gave over 11,500kgs at 4.77%BF and 3.20%P in her fifth 305-day lactation. This potential seventh generation VG/EX heifer joins John O’Brien’s herd.
The day’s reserve champion Ballyginniff Jasper Lucille 4 sold at 2,300gns for John Patterson from Crumlin, County Antrim. She is by the Comestar Lee son, Wilcoxview Jasper, and is bred from Ballyginniff Desire Lucille EX. Buyer was Robert McAuley, Lisnaskea, County Fermanagh.
Honourable mention award went to Relough Dollarman Primrose (PLI £88), from the herd of Ronald McLean and Sons, Donaghmore, County Tyrone. Sired by the home-bred Relough Dollarman, she came under the hammer at 2,500gns.
