Longtown Primestock Sale
2011-11-04

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 53 prime cattle, 2 young bulls, 47 over thirty month cattle, 6,867 prime lambs and 8,942 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 3rd November, 2011.

An increased number of 53 prime cattle forward with more well fleshed cattle on offer and once again a buoyant trade was had throughout averaging 190.3p. Topping the sale at 208.5p was a Limousin bullock from G.P. & E.A. Coates, Beckhall. Limousin heifers topped at 207.5p from D.J. Garthwaite & Son, Wyseby Hill Cottage, purchased by J.A. Jewitt Ltd.

A bigger show of Over Thirty Month cattle, mostly weathered cows and more buyers in attendance saw trade remain good. Top price of 150.5p for a Limousin cow from J. Retson & Son, Gardrum.

A full ring of buyers and a build up to the Muslim Festival of Eid saw a tremendous lamb trade in Longtown, averaging a terrific 186p per kilo with many 34-40 kilo lambs, no matter what breed, realising £2 a kilo. Top per kilo of 228p for Texels from J.W.
