BOCM Pauls Invests in Learning
2010-07-15

The UK's largest feed supplier to the dairy industry, BOCM PAULS, is embarking on the most comprehensive staff training programme for over 20 years.

BOCM PAULS

It's new “Invest in Learning” programme will see all of its 70 already highly trained Ruminant Account Managers receive even more detailed and comprehensive training in all aspects of ruminant nutrition and animal physiology than has been the case up to now, thanks to a tie-up with the University of Liverpool Veterinary school.

Vets and lecturers at the University will help to deliver the training along with the company's own technical nutritional specialists. Application of the “science” into practice will be delivered through the University's own Wood Park farm - a very high yielding dairy unit which BOCM PAULS has been feeding for some time.

The company has embarked on the programme because of the changing nutritional requirements of dairy cows and because the welfare and economic consequences of substandard nutrition can be significant. BOCM PAULS now feeds one in four dairy cows with a mix of compound feeds, straights and blends. Within its wide portfolio of products it has specific feeds and feed ingredients that can boost cow fertility by manipulating sex hormone levels, and other products that can, if used correctly, manipulate the saturated fat levels of milk and reduce methane. However, if these products are used incorrectly then they may have no beneficial effect, which is why additional nutritional training and physiological knowledge is so essential, says John Green, head of BOCM PAULS’ Invest in Learning programme.

With more complicated nutrition comes a requirement for more comprehensive training,” he says. “We are addressing this need. I have no doubt that as Invest in Learning progresses BOCM PAULS will have the most highly trained ruminant specialists in the industry, who can bring real, additional benefits to farmers and their animals.”
