Holywood Herd Dispersal Attracts a Crowd
2010-03-25

Buyers from the length and breadth of the UK descended on Borderway Mart, Carlisle to compete for Robert and Mary Whiteford’s “Holywood” herd of Pedigree Holsteins. Cattle went to Kent, Aberdeen, Ireland and pretty well everywhere in between.

Lot 72 Holywood Talent Fav VG86 (3yr) - 3200 gns

Holywood Talent Fav

This was the second of three sales to disperse this top quality herd and comprised the most recently calved and close to calving cows and heifers.

Buyers’ reports from the first sale a few weeks ago had been very positive and with this batch of over 200 head plus heifer calves being younger this time, plus more encouraging weather the trade was terrific from start to finish.

The cattle were exceptional in type, production and wear ability with the bonus of several carrying really classy pedigrees.

Fifteen animals made over 2500gns with three over 3000gns to a top of 3200gns. This bid came from DR&HM Horsley Ltd of Woodcatt Holsteins for a November calved 2nd lactation cow by Talent from the French “Favori” family developed so successfully at “Bilsrowan”. Her Shottle heifer calf made 1200gns and also goes to DR&HM Horsley Ltd, Woodhouse Farm, Catterlen, Penrith.

At 3100gns was a very smart January calved heifer from the hugely sought after “Vaakje” family and sired by Fustead Emory Blitz. The winning bid came from N&SJ Sanderson, Burtholme Farm, Lanercost, Brampton.

And at 3000gns was a fresh Final Cut heifer out of a VG88 Petra Cow, she now joins the herd of Balmangan Farms Ltd, Balmangan Farm, Dundrennan. Her Mr Minister heifer calf made 600gns and was sold to Messrs Dennison, Scales Park, Ulverston.

Every category of stock forward from old cows to baby calves was in great demand, as the averages show. It was no more that these wonderful cattle deserved.

The youngstock dispersal on Wednesday 7th April should be eagerly awaited.

Averages

74 Heifers in Milk = £1963.78
102 Cows in Milk = £1663.01
16 In Calf Heifers = £1903.13
65 Heifer Calves = £709.63

257 Overall = £1523.44
