Kirkby Stephen Classic is the Bees Knees

On Monday 8th March Harrison & Hetherington Ltd held their first Kirkby Classic show and sale of potential show cattle which proved to be a great success with a over flowing ring of prospective purchasers and vendors.

A fantastic turnout of cattle were put on show and judging was in the capable hands of Miss Louise Todd, Manor Farm, East Torrington, Market Rasen and was kindly sponsored by Border British Blue Club, B & B Dairy Group, Caltech, Carr’s Billington, Jobsons Animal Health, Novartis, Graham Edwards Trailers and the British Limousin Cattle Society.

The championship was finally awarded to Bees Knees, a superb Limousin cross heifer from Messrs D & C E Marston, Easegill Head, Wharton, Kirkby Stephen.  This April born heifer was sired by Soleil and out of a British Blue cross cow, later being knocked down at £2,500 to the judge.  The reserve championship went to the second prize Limousin heifer, consigned by Messrs JS & JO Dodd, West View, Temple Sowerby.  Shania a March born heifer by Sulky and out of a Limousin cross cow, realised £2,650 and joins the Harrymans, Keskadale herd.  The whole sale of show cattle averaged a fantastic £1,195.

A good entry of store cattle forward sold to a great trade for all classes sold.  The highlight being a consignment of British Blue heifers topping a £1,550 from Messrs K & G Whithead, Thwaite Farm, Thwaite, with the 6 sold averaging £1,110.  The whole sale averaged £805.29 for a generally younger show of cattle.

Also on offer where some quality units of breeding cattle, which were very much sought after, a top price of £2,100 for a stunning outfit consigned by Messrs W & J Ousby, Bents farm, Newbiggin On Lune.  Several units broke the £2,000 barrier and several prospective purchasers left the ringside without success.  A Charolais bull consigned by Messrs D Curr & Son, Bowderhead Farm sold for £1,470.

Cast cows were forward in good numbers with a high proportion of dairy bred cattle.  Black & Whites topped at 125.50p (£975.14) for a cow consigned by Messrs J W Little, Row End, Soulby.  The top price per kilo being 127.50p (£957.53) from Messrs K A Brown & Sons, Asby Hall, with all cows averaging £640.92 (92.6p/kg).
