Grassland Farmers to Get Top Tips on Reseeding Practice
2010-03-26

Farmers wanting to get the best from their leys can reap the benefits of expert advice at a special Reseeding Day at Harper Adams University College on 22nd April.

“Regular reseeding using high quality varieties from the RGCL will help maximise grassland productivity and cut feed bills."

The event, which is believed to be the first of its kind, marks the launch of the Recommended Grass and Clover Lists (RGCL) 2010. Organised by EBLEX, DairyCo, the British Grassland Society (BGS), the National Institute of Agricultural Botany (NIAB) and the British Society of Plant Breeders (BSPB), it will include a technical tour of the NIAB grass and clover variety trials plots together with expert-led sessions covering all elements of reseeding.

The presentations will feature DairyCo Extension Officer Chris Duller speaking on how to get the most from soil and nutrients and Paul Robinson, from Kingshay, giving advice on choosing the best reseeding method. Grassland specialist Charlie Morgan will address the subject of selecting species and varieties, and James Clarke, from ADAS, will discuss weed and pest control options. Finally, Don Pendergrast, of NIAB, will give an overview of the recommended lists and the benefits of choosing varieties from the lists.

“Grazing livestock on poor quality sward can significantly increase the cost of forage production and bought-in feeds,” said Dr Liz Genever, EBLEX Beef and Sheep Scientist.

“Regular reseeding using high quality varieties from the RGCL will help maximise grassland productivity and cut feed bills.

“This event is the ideal opportunity for producers to get practical reseeding advice and find out more about what goes into the recommended lists.”

The Reseeding Day will include a trade fair and refreshments will be available. Those who attend can also pick up a free copy of the new RGCL.
