Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 55 prime cattle, 4 young bulls, 35 over thirty month cattle, 5,277 prime hoggs and 4,131 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 28th January, 2010.

Prime cattle were a similar trade selling to a top of 185.5p for a Limousin heifer from Hallburn; Charolais 182.5p Hallburn; British Blue 184.5p Ladyhousesteads. Blonde d’Aquitaine bullocks to 175.5p The Gill; Limousin 171.5p The Gill.

Over thirty month cattle were a sharper trade with a top price of 161.5p (£1,065) for British Blue heifers from Ladyhousesteads; Hereford 122.5p (£673) Enzieholm. Limousin bullocks to 155.5p (£855) Swaites. British Blue cows to 140.5p (x2) (£1,131 & £1,088) Ladyhousesteads; Limousin 102.5p The Throp and Gallowberry.

Another large show of 5,277 prime hoggs sold to a full ring of buyers but a poorer show for quality was forward, however the sale still averaged a very sound 194p per kilo. The 3,460 hoggs over 36 kilos averaged 194.1p and the 1,638 under 36 kilos averaged 193.6p. Another large show of 4,131 cast ewes and rams sold to the usual ring of buyers, with trade remaining on par with previous weeks. More plainer ewes were forward and best ewes were short of supply.
