Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 64 prime cattle, 1 young bull, 28 OTM cattle, 5,744 prime hoggs and 4,668 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 12th March, 2009.

Prime cattle saw trade a little less by 3p per kilo for a plainer show of cattle, but still remained in demand. Top was 185.5p for a Belgian Blue heifer from Messrs Blaylock, Hallburn and purchased by Border Meats, Butchers, Lockerbie, others to 156.6p Randalinton; Limousin heifers to 170.5p, 168.5p Houghton House, 168.5p Greensburnm 166.5p Hallburn, 164.5p Dashwellgreen; Charolais 170p Hallburn, 169.5p, 166.5p Sceughdyke, 165.5p Hallburn & Sceughdyke. Top gross heifer £1084.13 Randalinton.

Limousin bullocks to 179.5p from Messrs Nicholson, The Gill and purchased by M Wharton, Butcher, Wigton, others to 176.5p, 170.5p Hallburn, 169.5p The Gill, 168.5p Corby Castle Estate; Charolais 166.5p Dashwellgreen, 165.5p Corby Castle, 164.5p Sceughdyke; Belgian Blues 166.5p Corby Castle. The OTM saw a buoyant trade with plain cows selling very well indeed. Top price was 152.5p for a Charolais heifer from T Armstrong & Sons, Sceughdyke. Limousin cows to 131.5p Nunscleugh, 120p Mosside; Friesian 118p Southlambhill, 116p, 110p Becton Hall, 113p Peterscrook, 102p Southlambhill, 100p Smalmstown. Shorthorn heifers 134p The Side.

Top price per head was £1071.60 for a Charolais heifer from Sceughdyke, Limousin Cows to £972.00 Mosside, £923.55 Nunscleugh; Friesians £858.40, £858 Becton Hall, £849.60 Southlambhill.

A fantastic show of prime hoggs. The 3659 hoggs over 36 kilos averaged 170p with the 2085 under 36kg averaging 167.3p. The overall average was 169.3p. There was a larger difference between good quality fleshed hoggs and plainer sorts than for sometime, but well fed hoggs were keenly sought after. The sale was topped at £108 for Texel hoggs from Rascarrel and to 205p for Beltex from Netherwood.
