Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 83 prime cattle, 52 OTM cattle, 4,969 prime hoggs and 6651 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 19th February, 2009.

All classes of clean cattle sold to a brisk trade with Charolais heifers topping at 191.5p from Messrs JW Vevers, High Stenries and purchased by M J Wharton, Butchers, Wigton, 170.5p High Stenries, 169.5p Sceughdyke; Limousin heifers 187.5p, 186.5p from J Retson & Son, Gardrum and purchased by W Kirkup, Butchers, Longtown, 181.5p Houghton House, 179.5p, 165.5p Hallburn; Belgian Blues 177.5p Gardrum. Top gross heifer £1200 for Limousin from Gardrum.

Limousin bullocks to 184.5p Slealands, 178.5p Hallburn, 176.5p The Gill & Hallburn; Blondes 183.5p The Gill; Charolais 173.5p High Stenries, 160.5p Hallburn; Salers 169.5p, 165.5p Hallburn.

The OTM met a great trade with more flesh on offer. Top was 144.5p for a Limousin heifer from D & Y Wilson, The Plumpe. Another grand show of hoggs were forward selling to a full ring of buyers who were keen for sheep. The 3494 hoggs over 36 kilo averaged 169.2p and the 1475 under 36 kilo averaged 160p.

The overall sale average was 167.7p. The sale was topped at £106.5p for Texel hoggs from Pirntation and to 206p for Beltex hoggs form Messrs MacTaggart Bros., Castle Douglas. Another monster show of cast ewes and rams were forward with heavy ewes and good selling ewes sharper on the week, regularly selling between £90 and £100, with the best Hill ewes maintaining recent rates, but plainter ewes easier on the week.
