Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 79 prime cattle, 38 OTM cattle, 5,202 prime lambs and 6,107 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 20th November, 2008.

The clean cattle lacked overall quality of recent weeks. Limousin heifers sold to 169.5p from Hallburn, others to 167.5p Brisco Hill, 166.5p, 164.5p Hallburn. Limousin bullocks 163.5p Haining House, 161.5p Upper Tinwald.

A smaller show of OTM cattle also lacked fleshed sorts. Limousin cows to 127.5p, 125.5p The Beeches; Angus cows to 124.5p, 117.5p, 102.5p Poltalloch; Simmentals 120.5p Poltalloch; Salers 117.5p, 115.5p Kilmartin. Belgian Blue heifers 125.5p Demense, Limousin bullocks 127.5p Blackhouse; Galloways 119.5p Skitby; Galloway heifers 105.5p Spout Bank.

A larger show of lambs, but with quality lambs in shorter supply. A full ring of buyers ensured a steady trade throughout, with the quality lambs heavily sort after. The 3358 lambs over 36 kilos averaged 116.7p and the 1,844 under 36kilos averaged 110.8p. The overall sale average was 115.1p. The sale was topped at £71.80 for Texels from G. Another large show of ewes saw extra buyers help maintain recent rates. The large and heavy ewes were in short supply and keenly sought after with hill ewes also in demand. Plain half meated ewes were harder to sell.
