Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 104 prime cattle, 65 OTM cattle, 4,534 prime lambs and 6,603 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 13th November, 2008.

More clean cattle were on offer and trade was the same for well finished sorts. Top price was 182.5p and 178.5p for Limousin bullocks from N Forster, Haining House and purchased by M Wharton (Meats), others to £174.5p, 173.5p Faulding Cleugh, 171.5p Hallburn. Charolais 171.5p Faulding Cleugh to W Kirkup (Butcher).

Limousin heifers to 175.5p, 174.5p Houghton House to Border Meats, Lockerbie; Blondes 175.5p Hallburn to M Wharton (Meats); Charolais 171.5p, 170.5p Sceughdyke to M Wharton (Meats); Shorthorns 167.5p Brydekirk Mains.

A larger show of OTM cattle comprised mainly plainer dairy bred sorts. Limousin heifers to 131.5p The Plumpe; Angus 119.5p Plumpe; Limousin cows 121.5p Blackhouse, 116.5p, 115.5p Demesne Farm; Friesian 111.5p Plumpe, 107.5p Southlambhill; Belgian Blues 109.5p Sceughdyke, 105.5p Camping Holm.

Another large show of lambs saw a full ring of buyers far keener on the week. More heavy lambs were forward meeting a brisk demand. The 3,459 lambs over 36 kg averaged 121.8p with the 1,057 lambs under 36 kg averaging 107.7p. The overall sale average was 119.5p up 8p on the week. Farm Assured lambs were still in short supply and we urge farmers to try to be farm assured as most main companies will not accept non farm assured stock.

Another excellent show of ewes met a sound trade to a full ring of buyers. Heavy ewes were dearer on the week with the best hill ewes upholding recent high rates and the smaller hill ewes slightly easier.
