Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 72 prime cattle, 1 young bull, 26 OTM cattle, 5,447 prime lambs and 5,352 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 4th September, 2008.

A smaller show of clean cattle saw more quality sorts on offer, trade sharper by 6 ½p. Top price of 180.5p paid by Maurice Wharton Meats for a Limousin bullock from J. & N. Blaylock & Son, Hallburn, followed at 179.5p Toppin Castle, 177.5p Houghton House, Hallburn and Toppin Castle; 176.5p Hallburn, 170.5p Sceughdyke; Charolais 177.5p A. Irving, Toppin Castle, 175.5p Hallburn; Galloway 157.5p and 150.5p G.M. & P. Forrester, Skitby. Heifers sold to 179.5p and 175.5p for Limousins from J. & N. Blaylock & Son, Hallburn, 172.5p Newby Farm and Toppin Castle; Charolais 172.5p Hallburn.

A smaller show of 26 OTM cattle saw well fleshed cows maintain late high rates and plainer sorts cheaper. Belgian Blue cows to 125.5p Bankshead; Simmental 112.5p Newhouse; Limousin 112.5p Harehill; Charolais 106.5p Quarryfield; Black & White 104.5p Peterscrook; Angus 98.5p Harehill; Shorthorn 92.5p Midtodhills.

Prime lambs were a large show for numbers and upheld recent high rates to a full ringside of buyers. Overall average was 129.3p, although the 3,842 lambs over 37 kilos averaged 132.4p, selling to a top of 148p per kilo for Beltex’s from Messrs Bell, Kirkton, Hawick and to £76.50 for Texels from Smalmstown. The 1,605 lambs under 37 kilos averaged 123.9p per kilo and to a top of 133p per kilo and £52.80 per head for Texels from Solwaybank.
