Longtown Primestock Sale
14/08/08

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 42 prime cattle, 0 young bull, 34 OTM cattle, 4727 prime lambs and 7,970 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 14th August, 2008.

The prime cattle sold to a similar trade for a poorer quality show. The top price was 183.5p for a Limousin heifer from Messrs Williamson, Dykehead and purchased by M/s Malone, Butchers, Edinburgh. Other Limousin heifers to 177.5p Swaites, 162.5p, 159.5p Houghton House; Belgian Blues to 168.5p Gardrum; Charolais 163.5p Swaites, 158.5p Dykehead, 158.5p Sceughdyke.

Limousin bullocks to 171.5p Brydekirk Mains, 171.5p Toppin Castle, 163.5p, 161.5p Houghton House, 160.5p Newby Farm.

The OTMs were a good show selling well with plenty of beef cows selling from 112p to 130p with the sale averaging 104.4p. Top price was a Limousin cow at 130p from W Hodgson, Blindhillbush. Limousins to 130p Blindhillbush, 129p Tinnis Hall, 126p Wanwood Hill, 119p Bleatarn, 117p Shaw Cottage; Belgian Blues 117p Blindhillbush; Charolais 127p Mosside, 122p Tinnis Hall, Friesian 115p Scugg House, 112p, 105p Grainhead, 95p Sandbed & Brisco Hill; Blondes 113p Tinnis Hall. Limousin otm steers to 117p Black House.

The largest show of the season and also a quality show, found buyers very keen with all classes easily maintaining last weeks extreme rates. The overall average was 132.3p. Top price per kilo 161.5p for Suffolk lambs from Messrs Thomson, Caberson. Top price per head £73.50 for Texels from TD Wilson, Hawthornside, others to £71.20 Stanley House; Suffolks £70.50 Barnglies, £67.20 Sceughdyke, £67.10 Becton Hall; Charollais £60.20 Borthwickshiels; Halfbreds £53.90 Earlside; Cheviot Mules £54.80 North House; Greyfaces £59.10 Redgatehead, £57.20 Rinnion Hills; Blackfaces £48.70 Ladyhousesteads; Swaledales £43.80 Kilnstown; Beltex £63.80 Townhead, £61.70 Rinnion Hills; Zwartbles £62.20 Falside Hill; Lleyns £53.80 Glenapp.

Light lambs also met a very sharp trade to average 128.4p, to a top of 141.7p for Texels from Stackbraes. A very large show of cast ewes and rams attracted the usual buyers with trade buoyant and all classes good to sell. Top was £74 for Texel ewes from Ballyclare, others £72.50 Winterhope, £71.50 Newry.
