Longtown Primestock Sale
12/06/08

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 71 prime cattle, 5 young bulls, 15 OTM cattle, 2,093 prime hoggs, 1,313 prime lambs and 2,934 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 12th June, 2008.

A smaller show of clean cattle were dearer on the week with bullocks averaging 166.9p and heifers 158.2p. Top price in the bullock section of 185.5p for a Limousin from J.C. & D. Nicholson, The Gill, others to 183.5p (x2) and 180.5p Dashwellgreen, 179.5p Hallburn and The Gill, 178.5p, 177.5p (x2), 176.5p (x2) Dashwellgreen, 175.5p Sceughdyke, 174.5p (x2) Houghton House, 174.5p (x2) Dashwellgreen; Belgian Blue 179.5p (x2) Hallburn. Limousin bullocks to £1,244 Crookholm, £1,238 Hallburn; Charolais £1,218 Sceughdyke; Belgian Blue £1,238 and £1,202 Hallburn. Heifers to 185.5p, 178.5p and 175.5p from Hallburn.

Young bulls were short of quality and also dearer with heavyweight Limousins selling to 157.5p Becton Hall; Belgian Blue 149.5p Becton Hall, top per head of £1,101 for Simmental from Sceughdyke.

A smaller show of OTM cattle was short of flesh with Black & White cows to 114.5p Stubbyknowe; Galloway 107.5p Smithsteads; Hereford 95.5p Cadgillhead. Black & White heifers to 123.5p Peterscrook. Limousin bulls to 110.5p South Lambhill; Black & Whites 88.5p Stubbyknowe.

A larger show of 1,313 prime lambs met the dearest trade of the week, with numbers well short of buyers requirements. The sale was topped at £90.50 (x3) for Suffolks from Synton Parkhead and Texels from Whins and Harelawhill. Top price per kilo was 201.8p for Texels from Barnglies. Charollais £89.80 Cardew Hall, £76.20 Yett Farm; Texel £88.80 Sykehead, £88.20 The Green, £87.80 Cardew Hall; Leicester £84.50 The Farm, Aikton; Beltex £83.20 Upper Glendivan; Oxford £81.20 Guards Farm; Lleyn £67.20 Guards Farm; Greyface £64 Reaygarth.

Lightweight lambs were also short of requirements and were easily sold to many buyers. Texel £64.80 Uppercleugh, £61.80 Upper Glendivan; Suffolk £63.80 Acreknowe, £56.50 The Hawthorns; Zwartbles £52.50 Cleughfoot; Herdwick £40 Laalsteins; Greyface £39 Laalsteins.

Also forward was a very good show for June of 2,093 prime hoggs. Good fleshed hoggs were sought after and upheld recent rates. Top per kilo of 146p for Texels from Johnstone Bank. Lightweight hoggs sold to a top of £46 for Hill Cheviots from Haithwaite, others £38.80 Beechcroft; Texel £45.20 East Mains, Texel £44.80 Slodahill; Greyface £44 Derwent; Beltex £43.50 Stackbraes; Blackface £41.20 East Mains, £40.80 Sockbridge Hall; Charollais £40.20 Watling; Swaledale £38.80 Sykehead, £37 Beechcroft; North Country Cheviot £38.20, £37.80 Sockbridge Hall; Herdwick £33.80 Haithwaite.

The 2,934 cast ewes and rams saw all classes dearer on the week and short of requirements to average £49.23 overall.
